Insanity Core - Losing Your Mind Core - Mental Breakdown Cor

Post by $harkToootth »

I've been re-visiting one of my favorite albums this week. HEITKOTTER “BLACK ORCKID”. I am not one of the record collectors that knew about this one for years. I only came across it when it was reissued in 2014. I probably found it from this press release https://www.nowagainrecords.com/announc ... ck-orckid/ but that does not seem right per the date it was published... I was in Florida that week and not "interneting". I remember getting REALLY into it around the holidays of 2014.

Point being, the man was apparently losing his mind while making the album. Maybe it was because of the hectic nature of the holidays but, again, the music really resonated with me. It's equally spooky/sad/hilarious/serene. I don't think this album is for everyone (if someone told me they hated it, I would be like "YEP") but for those interested in musicians losing their mind while making an album, and that emanating into the art... I would suggest at least reading about this.

This thread is not meant to glorify mental illness (although my title is tongue in cheek). Post albums where the artist was losing their mind and you find that music resonates with you, I guess?

Per usual, not looking for suggestions per say. I'm interested in YOU! Why does the album resonate with you! These aren't rules but...
1. Don't just post an album cover. I find that annoying as fuck. Please give context (namely why it resonates with you!)
2. No Daniel Johnston... please. We're good here. Same with Brian Wilson... we're good. Everybody and their Mother knows about those two. Only post them IF IT FUCKING RESONATES WITH YOU... AND WHY?

OH... BLACK ORCHID btw   SIDE NOTE: The 'it resonates' with you is supposed to be read in Vincent Gallo's voice in BUFFALO 66 when he keeps repeating "spanning time together". I'm not trying to sound like a prick (but I am).

Wow... this thread took off like a hippopotamus with bee wings.
Here's another one. One of my favorites from the Mid-2000s Blog_Core.
2007 - BC CAMPLIGHT -> "Blink Of A Nihilist". This album, to me, sounds very much like the time period it came out. It circulated the blogs for a while. Had 'that indie sound' of 2007. I'm being somewhat vague but I think you know what I mean????
I personally love/loved the album now and when it came out. It also holds a special place in my heart cause he was Philly based. I know he played with the members of WAR ON DRUGS... maybe DR. DOG too (fact check me, I don't know)?
This album was recorded right after a mental breakdown. It sounds nothing like that though... very light, very catchy, Brian Wilson like at times.

Upon doing more research for this post... I found this interview (I haven't really followed his career since this album). This Guardian interview cracked me up...Paris really does not jive with me at all. I think ‘Jesus Christ, doesn’t anybody hate themselves in this place?'

Obvious and obligatory answer:

I think I could post most songs from most Jandek albums up to the 90s or so when he started to mellow out, but Telegraph Melts I found to be especially uncomfortable to the point of being unnerving. He was weird already but it was a mellow and kind of comfortable weird, TM was jarring and abrasive in a hostile way that felt a bit alarming to listen to but pretty cathartic because of how open it was. There's nothing to interpret, no deeper meanings or any lines to read between, it just feels like a very direct outpouring of "not okay" which I think all of us need every now and then.

I feel like I've talked about Lewis to you before (because he's my hero) but his whole character is so overwhelmingly enigmatic and unbelievable that the songs he included on this release are quite harrowing. It took him quite a long time to release these albums but described them as "extremely quiet, religious songs" for years before releasing them. That quietness in combination with the stark, blunt lyrics and mild dissonance and his previous work appears incredibly naked to me, which I find quite touching. I've had this song on repeat for hours at a time while doing some heavy thinking and moderate drinking just to catch some feels and spend a few hours in that realm. The context of it being the husk of a previously enigmatic, young, handsome and elusive man I think makes this very touching and intimate. I imagine him playing these songs hooked up to machines in a palliative care unit, barely audible to the person on the other side of a hospital room divider.
