help for my pedalboard? redundant overdrive

Post by UnicornTrap »

Hey folks, first post here. I could use some suggestions on where to go next with my pedalboard setup.

For many years (mid 90s) my main drive pedals were a sovtek green russian and the vintage rat. I recently sold my green russian after going with a Black Arts Toneworks Sarcophagus fuzz (pharaoh and LSTR). The LSTR got me the green muff tones in spades, no issues there. I absolutely love the pharaoh side.

Here's my current work in progress. I play a 96 SG Standard or a modded telecaster w/duncan 59/jb's as my main guitars, into a 1965 Fender Tremolux with oversized speakers in the cabinet. My input is straight in, no fx loop fanciness. Imagine a TC Hall of Fame reverb and a Mid-fi Deluxe Pitch Pirate on the top left side. My amp has tremolo not reverb, so I the TC is the best option. I'm also considering a EQD sea machine or dr scientist cosmichorus for modulation but the DPP has scuzzy analog delay which I would probably use a lot.

I was playing this current setup a lot this week and the EQD monarch sounds great on its own but really redundant with stacking. I'm looking for possible replacements. I dig my rat for its bite on the end, or running the LSTR or Pharaoh separately into it. I'm considering a BAT Black Forest in front of the sarcophagus. Anyone have any advice for some overdrive/fuzz that stacks nicely into the LSTR and/or Pharaoh some color? I play fuzzy psych rock or stoner/doom generally. Please do not recommend a timmy to me, I already have plenty of clean boost between the tone job and the buffer+! I want something with character, man! :)

I don't think I'll get rid of the Monarch because it is an awesome pedal - will just get assigned to adhoc instruments ;)

Black Forest stacks well both before and after other dirt pedals.

Check out the builders here on ILF... An Algal Bloom, a Fuck OD, a Frazz Dazzler, an Eu Clair Thunder, or a Team Awesome Fuzz Machine would work for you... :thumb:

Yeah I've looked at the Baby Thundaa and the small Algal Bloom they both look cool. I think I have the muffy tones covered with the Sarcophagus, really looking ideally for something before it. I haven't played any of the ones you listed yet but someone locally does stock Dwarfcraft. Internet videos are great to check things out but it can be a lot different once you get it. My budget is limited, and I hate returning hand made pedals if possible. This Fuck OD sounds interesting but the info seems limited on the web from my half drunken search attempt

The Rat is after my muff sounds, so it gives me plenty to play around with on a medium sized board. I don't think I specifically need a total spittering sputtering glitch fuzz. If I just turn all these pedals on it once the breakup gets pretty random already. It has to have some umm more normal sounds in it too :)

Well UnicornTrap you came to the right place to get suggested Black Forest, Fuck OD or Algal Bloom and not without good reason, They are all fucking fantastic ODs that stack well. I can't see you not loving all of them so look up some sound clips and find which has the right personality for you or Just buy one and flip it for one of the others in the b/s/t if your not satisfied.

In the b/s/t right now:

I totally love stacking the Algal Bloom and (mini) Fuck with my LSTR! I know people round here always recommend these, but IMO they really are that good.

Never tried a Black Forest but I've heard great things from other people around here and based on how much I like the LSTR I bet it's good too.

There's quite a bit of info about the Fuck around, the smallsound/bigsound subforum here is probably the best place for it.

That little algal bloom with the zodiac design is pretty gorgeous looking. Has anyone used that for bass? Is the low end usable? I think the Fuck OD might be a bit too big for this pedalboard

Dalton makes a bass version of the Algal Bloom called the Bass Bloom.
