Make sure it's a rackmount that doesn't sum mono to stereo on input (pedal too, I suppose, I bet those exist) - a bunch of the older rackmount stuff does.

Everyone should just make a single stereo 1/4'' out and use an insert cable...

Insert cables suck ass for some applications is the problem, I'd rather have dedicated outs.

But I'm not a top-mount nazi.

That, I know nothing about. Haven't messed with too much rack stuff (or stereo effects at all). Good advice though.

Have to read the fine print on the summing and dig through the manuals a lot of times, but if you're entering rackmount and stereo effect land, manuals are your new best friend.

Been finding that out lately since I've been messing around with rack stuff (Ibanez HD1000, Boss RRV10) since I've been trying to coax good sounds of the old FB01 (well a while ago when messing with old Roland samplers and other midi sequencers).

I still think using a rack under a pedal is a neat idea. Might mess around to getting something under a board.

Since I don't use a pedalboard with my feet (crippleyo!), I've kept a Space Echo or a rackmount under the board for ages on and off. Only caveat on the SE is that to clean heads/change tape/etc it's a pain in the ass to move teh board, but not applicable with other effects.

Back in the stone age, there was a SKB board that had a 2 or 4 space rack pointing upwards out of a board, I always wanted one at the time.

the rack units are summing the L/Rs of the dry signal as well as the verb?

The verb out is generally stereo if advertised as such (individual patches might be mono, etc).

If summing occurs (and I'm sure in some units it occurs on some patches and not in others, one never quite knows and I've learned to not make blanket statements!), it's done at the input stage every case I've seen.

Like the venerable old Quadraverb and Midiverb 2 are stereo units, but the input sums to mono (and hence, why I only feed each with its own mono cable).

Keep in mind a lot of the old units assume that you'll be running them in a mixer-type loop where you have control over whatever, and set them likely 100% wet and control mix from the console.

I actually remember seeing those SKB boards around! I forgot about them. I used to have a SKB rack case with a drawer I build for my Korg Toneworks multi-effects (Ahem....I mean "noise setup") at the time that I would a/b my guitar with. I ran a sampler/feedback loop/mixer in the rack. Was fun, but not worth it for a 12 minute punk set...haha (this was 2004-5). Traded the rack stuff for plumbing tools.

I had these two really cheap, weird, rackmount DJ 12-bit samplers/loopers that had like time banks (no options or bend, just a big pad to sample and it cleared when it was off, no sync). Gosh, I wish I hadn't of sold them....(got them for like 30 dollars at a GC clearance sale, they were a blast).

Cheers on the SE, rack stuff, and information.

I just thought of the Oo La La quicksilver. Never used it or heard it but I remembered seeing one once. It isn't stereo but it has an effects loop. Maybe you could do something weird with tthe H9 using its stereo outs to feedback into the quicksilver for some ambient effects? Might be interesting (though it does have sidemout jacks). https://reverb.com/item/218478-oolala-quicksilver

Another option would be to get two cheaper reverb pedals, tie the inputs together during a rehouse and then leave the outputs alone. Like get two ghost echos or something and run them in parallel. Rehouse into a bigger box. That would be unique and awesome. Malekko minis could work nice if you find 2 used. Or something

thanks everyone for the input
vidret wrote:since nobody said it i'll say stereo wet reverb and use pancake plugs or something.
that wont work i'm afraid because its not a space issue. side mounted in/outs are fine ... but unfortunately in this case it has to be at the top so that the MIDI on the H9 is accessible on the left. so that means the verb's outs to the amps has to be at the top. i could tear everything off and redo the entire board but i'd rather use what i already have because money.
lordgalvar wrote:Put a Boss RRV-10 half rack under your board next to the power supply (might need a little taller feet for the board) and then use a remote bypass footswitch on top. Or use any half rack unit.
i like the idea but the cost and will definitely need to mod the feet since the PT is a small/low one. not a big issue that.

i was confused (and very curious!) about the "45 plugs" for awhile there too haha

DECISION:
looks like buying some sort of patchbay will be unavoidable if i want to change out the BSR and maintain stereo outs, which i do. so its gonna be a used TC Trinity with pancake jacks out to a T1M mini patch bay and raise the board to fit the bay underneath
