Where to get custom Jazzmaster pickguards

Post by PetZounds »

So, I want to replace the pickguard on my Squier VM JM.
I want to get one that only has a rout for a rhythm circuit, neck pickup, and output jack.
Does anyone have experience with any custom pickguard places?
(If anyone has experience with getting one specifically for a VMJM, that would be even more helpful)

I think Warmoth warns that their pickguards are only made for their bodies and won't retrofit a guitar.
That might be just them covering their asses but you can never be too careful.

No, Warmoth's jazzmaster guards are shaped slightly differently. They stop in front of the bridge, instead of having the cut outs for the thimbles.

edit: nevermind. I didn't know you wanted a custom one. Maybe ask this dude to make you one? Just got a VI guard from him. Super nice! https://reverb.com/shop/neagle-luthier

Why not make one?

Material is cheap, trace the one you have, then modify it as you see fit. If you have a drill, a coping saw, and some patience, you can do it. Then it's really custom, and you can say you did it. They're one of my favorite creative mods.

Those are nice, but expensive, another reason i vote for DIY.

You can purchase a pickguard from http://www.wdmusic.com/pickguard_jz_1400.html and tell them what you do or don't want routed on it. I just went through them with a bass VI pickguard, but the pickups I installed were wider and shorter than the stock ones, so I ordered the pickguard and requested that they not do the routes for the pickups so I could do them myself. Worked great and they had great communication via email and answered any questions I had. good luck.

Yeah, I ordered a custom guard without a rhythm circuit for my CP Jazzy from WDmusic; had no troubles ordering and it fit fine. Don't recall offhand whether or not they have the option on the site for the VM Squier, though.

I used a coping saw to cut a template out of thin, solid plywood for my old Yamaha Flying Samurai and then used random pickup templates I picked up at StewMac (and a few old pickgaurds). I used a dremel with one of those mini router bits. It gets too hot so you have to go slow and backtrack a bit while keeping it flush but a lamitate trimmer or real router table would be much better. I just cleaned up the pickgaurd with really really fine sand paper. It looked really good but it took a few hours. I made several prewired pickgaurds for that guitar before it got stolen. I don't know why I messed with it in the first place though. A really cheap project.
