mini

Post by frigid midget »

I always try to wait till the hype blows over when it comes to stuff that gets more praise then it can live up to...

Bought an Elements not too long ago. Sold it shortly after, but NOT cause it dissapointed. Whatever, that's a whole other story.

I'm now thinking of maybe trying a ss/bs mini.

It's probably me, but I can't find a single demo that shows what this thing's capable of, dispite the huge following of ss/bs obsessed fan boys :p

Can anyone point me to a decent quality clip that's not recorded with a phone/camera? On guitar, not just bass, and preferably no noise fest with a bunch other fuzz pedals running at the same time. Lots of fun I know, but not the best way to get to know a pedal.

It's just a really great overdrive with a good tone stack that is beefy and works well with others... Clips are clips...

Yeah sure, but that describes at least couple dozen overdrive peds, still doesn't explain why it's so insanely popular round these parts :idk:

Here's a partial isolated track from a song - there's a hint of reverb and a dmm, but I don't think it detracts from the main sound, which is a tele custom (with a jazzmaster pickup, neck position) - mini - jc120:

Here's the song itself for clarification:

it's not expensive and it sounds great and does a bunch of things. That bias knob is wonderful. Get it and flip it if you're not about it. Will sell. It's not hyped in my opinion it's just great. Play with it for more than ten minutes and I'm sure you'll find a love for it.

Yeah, I must agree.. almost all of SS/BS demos are (sorry to say) crappy. I love my mini, it's one of very few pedals that survived from my major & ridiculous gas-flip. Just get it, I 110% guarantee you'll love it. Don't waste time doing too much research on this puppy cos you won't regret it

I post bass because Ben plays chords. So yea. Gives you some idea.

You could always buy a used one for cheaper and resell if you don't dig it.

Yeah all the demos I found sucked. Haha.

Ok, compared to the elements:
It's a jfet overdrive. If you've ever played one they are pretty different to op amp ods like the elements. I wouldn't say more tube like, but that is what the Internet will tell you. :idk:

The EQ is far less extreme and less flexible than the Elements.
The EQ is however rad, and very useable.

It can get as transparent as the Elements. Well, almost.

On high gain it is a fuzz. To my ears the Elements is always a distortion. Mini won't chugga chugga, and The Elements won't bong fuzz out.

With the bias down you get a fizzy, lofi decay. The Elements is always hifi. Bias up is hifi though. But who cares, low bias is the best.

Overall, the mini is looser than the Elements.

Mini stacks really well.

Low to medium gain with the bias up there is a fair bit of common ground between the two. The mini does artefacts in the decay and misbiased sounds, the Elements brings the metal.

It is a great complement to The Elements. Depending on how you used it it can either be a good replacement or a wildly different beast. If you were palm muting a lot on The Elements you might want to try something to tighten up the mini and boost the distortion a bit, like a TS or similar.

^ basically this. I think the elements and mini don't overlap at all so if you flipped an elements you may well love the mini anyway. It has a lot if character, i put mine near the end of the chain and use it like a dirty channel preamp then turn the elements on into it to increase saturation and feedback.
Seriously though, that bias knob. It's what most other drives are missing and why it fits into so many peoples setups thus the hype.

To me the elements sounded modern and digital. That's why I sold it. The Mini sounds natural and works better with any amp I play it with. Mini just fucking rules where the elements was not consistant through different amps.

Too add onto Chiller than most(life aquatic buddies). The mini is lo-fi-er. I have the elements and the mini on my board. I use my elements as a distortion or an EQ/Treble booster/clean boost. depending on what im doing that day. I use the mini just for mouthwatering overdrive. It just sounds so good. With the EQ and gate knobs i can get it to a very crunchy to the brittle, trebly, very broken sounding overdrive. Like sounding like broken glass overdrive, idk how to word that im drunk and it's i sound i love using when playing really nasty sounding chords like when in drop D and fretting 8 on the low D string and 12 on the A string. a little power chord that has an off sound to it. The mini just sounds smooth and warm and all that descriptive stuff that someone from the gear page would use to describe a KLON into Dumble

TL:DR get the mini and if you dont like it I'll buy it from you so I can be like Kbeinthecrowd and have two on my board.

I just got my fourth Mini. I've flipped it to try other stuff and I always come back. I won't be flipping this one. I dont have much else to add, but if you're thinking about getting one, just get one. Its so perfect.
