big fan of EQD's grand orbiter. I have it set SUPER slow and just have it always on subtly effecting what ever I am playing…

Yeah it's a new guy. Honestly I was sceptical when I first heard about it, but after hearing HoFs set I loved the sound and had to have a squizz at his board. And there it was.Chankgeez wrote:Ah, gotcha, thanks. I didn't even know about the phase 99. Weird.
Mother fucker is glittery like a drag queen though.
Which may make or break a deal there.
Personal preference.

I'll back up the Small stone statement.
I have a clone of a vintage Small Stone made by Anarchy Audio here in Australia. It's a meticulous clone of the owners own late 70s small stone with volume and tone knobs as well as a "MORE!" switch which just kind of subtly boosts, deepens and accentuates the sweep on the fly, great little tool.
It's fucking mad, best phaser I ever played. Super Super thick and Warm.

The one on the right is mine and damn, shit rips

Im on a frikkin ipad right now, plus Im lazy...So if anyone can eleborate on that phase99, I'm all ears. If it's the typical mxr type small enclosure, that'd be a huge bonus right now. I'm on a giant shopping spree right now, buying peds on an empty wallet, and my board is already overflowing with stuff I dont want to ditch:s
So in this case, smaller = better.
I saw that VS oil can online before. Never really took it seriously, just assumed its junk because it was ridicilously cheap

and frigid, i believe the phase 99 is essentially two phase 90's in one box? with only one switch so you have dual phasing at two speeds, or you can sync them and stuff
if i didnt prefer small stones vs 90s i would probably have got one by now

Yeah man, Johannes and his helpers make killer shit. This is the third AA I've owned, I also had cockblocker #3 and a double OCD/BoR type proto which I have since moved on. It's a shame he isn't making any more of these phasers, only 3 as they were super costly from his perspective and they are rad as. He did say there might be more as the two guys he has building with him now get more proficient on all his production stuff though so you never know.

Awesome, Johannes builds great stuff!
I love the Small Stone for that deep luscious swoosh, so far none of the boutique phasers I tried really came close, there always seems to be something not quite right about them.
I didn't like the Garagetone Oil Can much, it also sounds a bit thin compared to a real Small Stone, the sweep just isn't completely right and the depth control is pretty useless as it doesn't do much so that also makes it less versatile.
There's some exceptions but I usually don't like phasers with more or less than three or four stages really, the sweep on them gets quite extreme and more often than not this makes it sound quite thin and sometimes a bit hifi or something.
That said the Infanem Faye Sing and Pigtronix EP1 and EP2 come to mind as cool phasers with more than four stages.
I don't think you're looking for a Phase 90 or a VFE Enterprise or other derivates as they tend to be on the subtle side soundwise.
The ones I still have:
Cusack Tap A Phase (really versatile and very good sounding regular phaser which also does cool freaky stuff)
EHX Small Stone (the best for thick and luscious sounds, volumedrop is easy to mod)
Empress Phaser (great for the freaky waveforms and random and stuff, one of the worst for regular phasing that I know of)

This thing is my favorite 4stage phaser, forgive me teasing as it probably isn't a realistic option for most.
I'm still impressed I was able to score one...and without losing a limb.
This is the only pedal that could make me do something regrettable like give up a BEZ Street Sweeper.
I'm a big fan of the depth and rich sound associated with tube amp tremolo and vibrato...and this gives similar treatment to phasing with simple options.
Rolling tubes further opens up options for tweaking the phaser's character, particularly the bottom end response.
Its input is amp-like; lower-output fuzz circuits stacked in front roar with new life...and that frozen notch mode is intense...and so is the WOW effect when sweeping.

I'm still on the lookout, but my search is pretty much exclusively focused on Small Stones. For all the reasons that've been mensioned: Deep fat swoosh, not too many bells and whistles to distract me from the core mission, affordable, and not too big for my small board. Can't see how anything else could make me change my mind, unless I accidentally come across a stupid good deal for a whetstone or Quasar or something. Which -like I kinda already hinted- are totally the wrong pedlols for me. Big and/or packed with extras that i'll rarely ever make use of:s

^ Isn't the Sibling a kind of mini Whetstone, which would definitely suit your needs? There's one in the BST forum now.

Don't know if it's supposed to be a mini whetstone or not*, but if I can't find one for roughly the same as what a Small Stone V4 would cost me, I'm sticking to the plan.HorseyBoy wrote:^ Isn't the Sibling a kind of mini Whetstone, which would definitely suit your needs? Btw, no mension of the Malekko analog phaser yet? Without having heard a single clips or having read a single review: There's 3 things in it's favor...
-Super small. Meaning I might not have to kick another pedal of the board.
-Very affordable
-A company I sorta respect. In a different way than say, Boss or EHX.

I had a malekko lo fi delay a little while back. I liked it a lot.
Actually....why the fuck did I sell that thing?
Anyway, they make great shit. If you dig the sound of them, I can vouch for their build quality (ive not heard their phaser in the real world).

Forgot about it, I didn't try it but the Malekko seems pretty good for the sound you're looking for.
