There hasn't been a phaser thread in a while...

Post by frigid midget »

Has there? If so, here's another one! :)

just sorta bought me a flanger, but my hunger for more modulation has only grown
I did a forum search, which gave a couple good ideas, so I spend the past half hour checking reviews and demos. I've got it down to these 5:

Subdecay Quantum Quasar
VFE Enterprise
EHX Small Stone. The only one on the least I heard in action irl. I'd go for the older big box version with the TB switching an status led.
Blackout Effectors Sibling
Maestro Stage Phaser

The plan is to just try my luck with whichever one I find a good deal for first, and flip my way towards the pedlol that meets my needs. Please stop me if I really need to take something of that list, or enlighten me if there's one in partical that stands out for some reason.

Key words: Small. Affordable. I'll stretch my budget if I come across a Maestro, I just have a weak spot for vintage shit. Also: F*ck subtlety, I want deep lushious swooooaaash. Haven't made up my mind where I stand in terms of knobs, features, tweakability. I know I don't need to go overboard on filtered ring mod spaceship noises, just bread and butter phasing will do. Preferably without too much excessive tone coloring, volume drops, or other unwanted side effects. Though the ability to get into univibe territory would be a plus.

I once borrowed jrmy's Baby Quasar. As he'll tell you, sounds just like what you're looking for. They can still be found used at very reasonable prices. Look into that?

Check the Infanem Compact Faye Sing thread. I'd definitely add the Faye Sing B to that list - loving mine and would put it in the small and affordable category. But the Sibling sounds really good to me, too. There are others (really love the sound of the Moonphaser: http://www.moonphase.co.uk/moonphaser/) but they ain't small or cheap.
Sounds like it'll be a fun search. Hope you find what you're after.

the subdecays have a very sharp filtered sound, sounds quite unique at hi-res, and can get extreme.
the quantam has all the different wave shapes and special effects, and a wider speed range.
the baby has a slightly cleaner sound and control over the depth and centre freq.

the vfe is very flexible, lots and lots of options inc vibe and vibrato sounds. have to use internal trim to balance the volume at different settings though when upping the res. which is a pain in the butt.

i havent tried the new infanem, but with 4/6/8 stages and all the speed ranges, mix, wave range, it looks like it covers a lot of ground including the maestro (6 stage optical?). i had the big infanem, was a bit ambivalent about the sound, but thinking about trying the new one

you can pick up boss ph-2 really cheap, give it a go.
its 10 or 12 stage, so really whooshy. with tons of res and good speed range
Sold to: dan_abnormal (3 times), Abanoise, Kayzer, Ragged Trousers, Schlatte
Bought from: McSpunckle, RitalinCupcake, Tendollarcat, Brobee, Ryan, cedarskies, behndy

See, I knew it was a good idea to ask here first:)

Why didn't I know there was a compact version of the infanem faye sing?? Just google'd it, the looks alone are worth having it on my board, dayumn

Baby Quasar: dito. It somehow stayed under my radar :idk:

The list is just getting longer though, instead of shorter lol

Both the infanem and the subdecay supposedly have that filtered thing going on though, which according to some can sound harsh on peaks. I'm just going on what I read online ofcourse, which for now is all I got.

PH-2: A buddy of mine had one ages ago, I remember being annoyed by a slight volume drop.

Anyway, thanks A LOT so far, this stuff is golden.

Thanks for the tip. $160 though:s

$165,75 brand new at prymaxevintage atm :?:

Also, update: Infanem compact fay sing won't make it to my list. Totally can't justify the $285 price tag, nor the average/estimated used price. Might as well concider the moog or whetstone in that price range. Which I can't:s

I've always dug the Subdecay phasers. I have a Quasar DLX on my board right now. Definitely all the fun phaser stuff there in one box plus vibrato, ring mod, bleep bloops, swooshes, and discomfort noises. They can do all of the weird sounds but if you can keep yourself from running the mix, depth, and voice at higher levels, you can still get chewy kind of phaser tones that sounds more "normal".
I've also heard good things about the EQD Grand Orbiter and they just released a new one in a smaller box but the older version is always easy to find for cheap.

But what it really sounds like you're looking for is the Mr. Black Gilamondo

I've had a PH-2 for abut 13 years, it's beat to shit and I love it, but I've pretty much retired it. I had it modded to correct the volume drop, but that also increased the noise considerably when it was engaged. So it lives in a box, but I've gotten my money's worth many times over.

I am currently phaser-less but itching, since it's my preferred modulation. I regret selling the Empress Phaser I had, that's the best/most versatile one I've heard (but very $$$). I prefer it to Infanem, Strymon (Mobius phaser), Solidgoldfx, EQD... though I do really *like* all of those. Haven't played the Subdecays yet.

That's before tax. End up being around 175 at Prymaxe.
I can lower the price if you're interested

i fucking love my ph-2. it has a really intense sweep when you set the rate low. it gets really aggressive running before or after fuzz too.
