I've seen tips to avoid this. Like keeping a bowl full of mini chocolate bars, that way when you cheat they're smaller.
I've also heard that chocolate tends to be better for you than chips. Especially if you stick to dark chocolates
I think that's something else that I'll be trying

thats your first problem right there, having bowls of chocolate lying around!
you have to seriously ask yourself - do you want to lose weight? or do you want to have treats and comfort eating?
you cant have it both ways.

if i have any chocolate, or cookies, or chips in the house then i cant help but stuff my face with them until they are all gone.
the answer is simple - dont buy them.
dont buy them, dont have them in the house.
when you are in the supermarket, dont put them in the basket, dont take them to the till, dont pay for them, dont buy them.

when you think you are craving them, look down at your fat belly, grab your waist in your hand and feel all the squishy flab.
these comfort foods arent your friend, they are your enemy and they are killing you with gallons of internal fat sloshing around your heart and lungs and liver.
diabetes, cholesterol, strokes, heart attacks.

no chocolate, no cookies and cakes, no icecreams, no fizzy sugar drinks.
those are the obvious ones, and you also need to look at processed foods like breakfast cereals and other things which have vast amounts of added sugar/corn syrup.
its fat food that serves no purpose other then to give you a few seconds of addictive mouth pleasure and a fat flabby belly and premature ageing.

I always find these sort of threads tend to focus on what you can't or shouldn't eat. To me, I've always found myself wondering what the hell there is left that's ok to eat. Anyone care to share what foods they eat in order to maintain a healthy but fulfilling diet? In particular substitutes for snacks etc seeing as they always seem to be my downfall :)

I'm not a health food guy. I eat rich, fatty, sweet foods-- but I do it in semi-moderation. I am fairly active, although I rarely exercise for the sake of exercising. I'm a healthy weight.

Anyway, my only tip is one that worked for me, and is easy to do: stop drinking soda. This one small thing makes a HUGE difference.

Just do the math:

NSFW: show
12oz coke = 39g sugar
39g sugar @ 4g/tsp = 9.75tsp
9.75tsp = 1/5cup

I used to drink 4 cans of coke per day, minimum, every day. It was my primary beverage. Let's see how much sugar I drank:

Daily: 156g of sugar
Weekly: 1,092g of sugar
Annually: 56,940g of sugar

56,940g of sugar is 2,033.5oz. That is 127lbs of sugar per year, just for soda. 25 bags of sugar, just for soda! At 3.87 calories per gram, that is 220,358 calories per year. It is insane.

I now drink iced tea. 1/2c sugar per gallon. I get the equivalent of 10.67 cans of soda from the gallon of tea, so 0.046875c sugar per 12oz serving. That's 2.25tsp per serving, or 10g of sugar.

10g/serving for tea, 39g/serving for soda. 74% reduction in sugar consumption. Instead of 127lbs sugar/year, I now drink about 32.5lbs sugar per year in my tea-- 94 pounds less, or roughly 163,000 calories less, than soda.

Easy switch. Big cumulative impact.

See I've tried to just not buy it and completely cut it out but, like jwar and bigchief were just discussing, that just lead me to cheat and eventually quit
Hence, the cutting back, keeping a bowl of small chocolates around and eating one when there's a craving
Although, just not buying processed crap has worked for me, but I don't crave that stuff, so I feel like that's different

Really looking at my diet these past couple days, I realize I eat healthy when I'm not lazy
For example, more times than not I tend to be too lazy to bike home at lunch and make a sandwich, instead I get pizza or some shit
Or I work late and don't want to cook so I pick something up on the way home
But when I actually cook I tend to eat stir fry or chicken breast and veges or pasta or eggs

Yeah, but if you do drink coffee, no sweeteners or cream/milk.

I have lost 25 lbs since this past October and it didn't take a whole lot of effort on my part (feel free to throw things at me). I had a routine checkup last October and the Dr informed me that the guidelines for cholesterol levels had changed and that I was now on the borderline of healthy/at risk, so I could stop taking meds if I keep my triglycerides in check. Triglyceride levels are largely shaped by diet and cutting carbs and sugars usually brings them down significantly.

All I did was cut my carbs and sugars in half, because I knew if I tried to go cold turkey, I would fail hard. I've substituted whole wheat and rye (you have to read labels, because sometimes the flour is a mix of white) for my breads and pastas, cut out sugary drinks, cut down on desserts, and try to practice portion control.

As for excersise, I just do little lifestyle changes like park towards the back of the lot and walk further, take the stairs, etc. I really hate regimented workouts and get board really fast, so I prefer to increase my physical activity through chores and projects. The upside is the house is a lot cleaner too.

So without making any major changes, I went from 210 - 185 lbs in about six months. It's nothing others haven't already said, but by changing a few little things, you should see results pretty fast.

I use Stevia in my coffee and it doesn't change any loss or gains. It is fine to take while losing weight.

I disagree with the drink water in place of everything. I drink water like it's going out of style, coffee, pre workout, bcaa's, stuff like that. ;)

That's my smart assed comment for the day.

Also, chocolate bad sir. CHOCOLATE BAD! Dark chocolate is fucking myth IMO. I'm way healthier without that shit. Just like drinking two glasses of wine a night is bs. You don't need that.
