make a ring mod that would fore go all the dissonant/tremolo sounds and really focus on bell tones and work sound shaping parameters from there. Maybe making them bigger/smaller sounding, maybe some modulation per chance?

Maybe be able to travel into Rhodes territory?
Like this?

hmMMMMMMMmmm

That's going in the right direction, though I really need to hear that demo through headphones. If we could just fit more bells into it somehow....

How did it play with fuzz?

I've used it before fuzz and it pretty much turns it into a resonant robotic ring mod. The other thing that comes to mind is maybe a tweaked formant filter? :idk:

I want an orchestra simulator.

Like, something where you turn it on and play and it sounds like your playing full string sections. I have alot of that shit pre programmed into my music and live shows, it would be great to be able to pull that off live.

I wonder: have we discovered every type of effect there is? Is someone going to come up with something that is completely unlike any other effect? Something new and game-changing? Not like a mixture of other effects, but a totally new thing?

Rainbow Machine?
As far as the theory behind signal processing goes, I don't know if the rainbow machine would be considered a 'new' effect.
It's an interesting question to ask. I can't think of any attributes of a signal that could be changed outside of what we can already do.. phase, amplitude, waveform, using delay lines, low frequency oscillators to control parameters etc. Everything 'new' is just a different approach to manipulating the same existing qualities of audio really, but that doesn't mean someone won't come out with a pedal that makes sounds that are totally unique to what we're accustomed to, just gotta get creative :thumb:
I would really love to see more digital effects modeled on the processes used in fx you get with like ableton/logic plugins. We're pretty limited in that a device can't look ahead and analyse the audio if you're just playing in real time though. Need PSYCHIC PEDALS.

I think we have years and years worth of projects to look forward to. Maybe not boundary-breaking sonic adventures, but certainly that of control. Pedals like the BitQuest, Empress Tape Delay and the Warped Vinyl are all futuristic pedals that have a huge future ahead of them. They're some of the first of their ilk. In general we need more analog pedals with digital brains. There is a huge market there if you have the experience, the education, the money and the time to invest in it.

Digitech Space Station has a bunch of modes that do strings emulations.

^ yeah depending on what you're going for the space station could pull it off. very very cool pedal.

but really the best sounding solution if you want an actual string section sound would be to get a guitar synth. I have a GR-33 which i picked up for less than my old space station/XP1000 which does a ridiculous amount of stuff. I can only imagine the GR-55 would be even better, i'm sure rfurtkamp can attest to that. The tracking is actually REALLY good on those roland pickups if you take the time to mount and calibrate them properly.

I feel like the vast majority of old effects were emulating physical effects: tape echo and flanging, overdriven amps, torn speakers. As things get more digital, I hope to hear completely new forms of audio mayhem, not limited to what old analog equipment could do.

I've been looking for a Snarling Dogs Very Tone, based on the old Gibson Varitone circuit, and I got to thinking... Someone needs to make a doge themed Very Tone: Very Toan, Much Boost, So Guitar.
