Duo Sonic Refinish!

My beloved mim Duo Sonic has gone from this:

One of my favorite Fender color combos! :joy:

I used ReRanch Surf Green. I didn't strip the black finish, just sanded thoroughly, then sprayed with white primer. I didn't do a gloss coat over the color...it looks vintage this way and is still plenty shiny (and I haven't had good luck with ReRanch's gloss nitro, which is probably as much my fault, but their color coats go on so nicely, then the gloss isn't as cooperative and runs easily).

The frets on my Duo were worn when I got it, and I finished wearing them out. :) I bought a 2nd Duo Sonic that the previous owner had recently refretted, took the neck and sold everything else but the white pickguard, which got sprayed with pistachio green and trans amber to get a nice aged mint. Cheaper than a refret, cheaper than having a mint pickguard made!

Pickup covers and knobs for a few bucks...all in all, $20-30 into the makeover.

Tone Zone S in the neck (series-parallel-split) and a BG Pups Phatty I already had went into the bridge.

Love it! Except the neck pickup now looks really out of place beyond aesthetic mismatches to my eye. But that's me.

I disagree. I think it looks just right in it's out of place-ness.

Yeah red pickup is sweet. Colored pickups shouldn't just be for the JEM shred dudes :thumb:

I have another cream no-holes cover, and it actually fits over the Dimarzio. But...
Phantasmagorovich called it. That out-of-placeness was exactly what I was going for. :) :p It's so off among the 50s pastel sweetness; it makes me happy.
phantasmagorovich wrote:Y U NO ILF STICKA?

Oh, that'll happen!

:thumb: TIME TO TAKE IT BACK FROM THE SHREDDERS!
It's Dimarzio's pink...a tad orangey, and a skosh red.

Ya'll know I'm a neck guy. Almost just did a dummy pickup (easy to do with no-holes covers), but hey, some extra sonic choices? :idk: Sure!

Wait a minute. Not to hijack a thread about this adorable guitar, but how do those reranch colors work? Do you need any special equipment or do they actually come in spraycans?
