Brent Hinds gets a new EGC V every few months it seems. That doesn't bother me, totally get it from a business/marketing perspective. I don't think you'd find many builders, guitar/pedal/amp/whatever, that wouldn't prioritize in the exact same fashion.

Eh i dont know about this man. I mean i think obviously they rush high profile clients guitars but not many builders do it to such a level that its downright disrespectful to their clients. The way i see it is this: if i were a builder, rockstars would be great, but I would be much more honored when i got an order from a regular working class guy.

When people who dont necessarily have the money to order a new axe every month (or may only have the chance once in a lifetime) they tend to do alot more homework and agonizing and comparing and, in the end, do alot more old fashioned work before they plunk down the change on a custom. If somebody told me "I poured months of my life working my ass off scrimping and saving to get this money, and I feel like you can turn out a product of an equal value to the time and energy i expended to pay you" theres no way in FUCK I could live with myself giving them some bullshit date, taking down their specs halfassed and then taking their money knowing full well i was going to build their guitar whenever i damn well felt like it.

Theres only one way people get that kind of mindset, its from never having to work for a living. I may just be a young guy but ive spent years in factories and warehouses. Believe me when i say coming home and not being able to sleep because youre in so much pain from standing in one spot on a concrete floor for 12-13 hours changes the way you see things. Theres been times where id get home from work and take off my socks to bloody raw toes from walking up and down catwalks in steel toes. I dont know about cooler states but when its 102 in a factory and youre rushing to keep an expansion mould loaded the swampass can get so bad you have to go to the doctor.

Theres just no way, having worked as hard as i have, that somebody who works for a living could hand me a couple grand with the belief that what i was making, something thats not a necessity, was worth what they had to go through to earn and save that couple grand, and then treat them like joe fucking blow because some drugged out alchy piece of shit thats been on the cover of decibel just got his royalty check. That kind of thing is fucking despicable to me.

I def understand where you're coming from and completely respect that opinion, very logical. Every business should operate just as you described. I just think a lot of companies are happy to cater to artists who may be about to hit the road on tour or the studio or whatever. That artist exposure factor is big and some of these builders are probably fans themselves. I don't think it's right and I think Kevin could save himself some trouble if he avoided posting those guitars so frequently but the wait is so fucking drawn out anyway, I just stopped caring I guess. Shit, I don't even know when those guitars were ordered, all speculation, but it seems like they come up really regular.....

But I hear ya, it's a lot of fucking money that most EGC customers had to bust ass to earn and It's a HUGE decision to throw that money at any guitar. Would be nice if everything operated in a nice and orderly manner.

eh... I don't think Hinds has a bunch of identical EGCs, his guitar is just one of the more standard models they produce (and with the popularity of Mastodon, and the slickness of that V I'm sure they sell a few). When Kevin puts one up on facebook I would imagine it's someone else's order.

Kevin posts the customer name with each guitar tho, that's the giveaway. Scott Shriner from Weezer (of all shitty bands) just had another new one posted today.

I have no clue when they were ordered, way before mine possibly, who knows? I will continue to patiently wait and complain from time to time. That's how I manage. ;)

I think THEBEERHAMMER was referring to Albini's Electrical Audio studio forums tho, thus the confusion.

Why would it be any other way, though? It's in their interest to deliver more quickly for higher-profile clients. If they'd publicly declared some kind of 'first come, first served, no matter what' guarantee and were going against that, that would be one thing... as it is, I don't understand the surprise that a company like this might bump my order for a big name client.

I'm not surprised, just disappointed that they'd stick to this cliche. Buzz is much better advertising than I am, I get that. If it's taking a year to get guitars out for those customers that actually paid or at least paid full price then it might be time to hire some more people and invest a bit back into the business so they can expand...especially when they're telling people 4-6 months on builds. I love my EGC but hate dealing with their run-around and eventually it'll mean that I won't buy another guitar. If I had another options to build me a doubleneck that I had confidence in for a similar price I probably would have done it.

it seems like all too many small/boutique businesses in music are having similar issues, from the complaints about waitlists to the dialectic of investment vs. potential return and the weird changes that happen to folks along the way. going from applied arts to commerce must really be a bitch when you're heavily invested--in every sense--in your own business.

Good point! Seems a lot of people aren't equipped to handle the commerce side of things. Gotta spend money to make money, lots of boutique guys (and small businesses in general) seem to ignore this fact but it's a fine line I'm sure, def a big decision.

I think there is a big problem that many botique companies face when looking at expansion, and that is losing the "botiqueness" of it. I think zvex is a great example of some of the downsides. His pedals sold great so he expanded his company along and kept the same build quality, customer service etc. as when he was a startup company. However now that the market is flooded with models the resale and gear GAS is not quite as there for the general public as it used to be. I think it is based of the subconscious rational of thinking I can get this whenever. some times you create a lot more demand and sell more products doing small runs. Economics is evil.

Awesome bronzetalon, congrats, looks sick! What's the extra toggle do? That powder coating obviously moves a lot faster, when did you order? Anodized moves so goddamn slow, figures I had to get like every part anodized, even the pickguard and control plate, geez it takes FOREVER!

Our guitars are gonna look sorta similar but they're so totally different in terms of electronics and wiring/switching. Need to have that meetup the minute mine arrives, will be super cool to compare all the differences. :thumb:
