Lead-free solder could be a big problem for anyone trying to use a basic soldering iron and tips designed for regular solder.

I agree.. Some of my friends have this problem with their cheap Radio Shack irons.. so I always keep some lead around to swap them.

Not to de-rail the thread even further, but I'd love some recommendations on a good quality/inexpensive station for medium light duty...which means the occasional guitar wiring project, infrequent pedal builds/repairs.
Can a decent one be had in the $50 range?

I would recommend a Hakko clone - the originals are discontinued.
