Use L6 DL4 for other fx (Chorus, Auto-wah, Ring Mod, etc)

Post by fuzzypumpkins »

Posted this on Rig-Talk earlier today and not surprisingly, no one replied, lol. Thought I'd put it here too as it might be of more interest. ;) Sorry if this is old news. I found out about the auto-wah a couple years ago from experimenting with settings and finally got around to trying the other models . Anyway, here it is:

For Auto Wah:

Select the Sweep Echo model and set the controls as follows:

Delay Time-0
Repeats-0
Tweak and Tweez can be adjusted to taste but the best results occur with both around Noon
Mix-100% wet

You now have a nice sounding auto-wah/envelope filter effect. Basically it uses the "sweep" part of the sweep echo without the echo.

The same control settings (give or take on Tweak and Tweez) can be used for other effects

For Chorus: Use the Analog w/mod or Digital w/mod and set as above
For Ring Modulator: Use the Reverse Delay setting...
For a Slow Gear type of effect: Swell...

You can even get a good FUZZ tone, similar to a Colorsound (with an od pedal before the DL4): -To achieve this, run an od pedal with moderate gain into the DL4, and then dial in a slightly crunched out rhythm sound on your amp, sorta semi clean, but a bit dirty (in my case, it's RHY 2 on the MarkIV) and then use the Tube Echo model on the DL4 with the same settings as the others, or you can add a bit of delay time for a very short slapback delay. This gets that stinging, messy, falling-apart fuzz tone, as the tweak and tweez controls add a sort of treble boost that drives the amp hard. Combined with the overdrive before the DL4, this sounds like sex.

You get the picture. Try each model with these control settings. They all have a cool "hidden" effect or eq setting that can be used. Best part is that they can be saved as presets! (I'll update with a quick demo when I find the time)

I loved finding settings like this when I had the DL-4.

That overdrive one is a nice catch... it does sound pretty digital, but it's a great thick overdrive.

The Tube Echo and Tape Echo have a lot of cool shit going on... I got a really neat warbly Wow & Flutter synth tone going with an Ebow.

The Lo-Fi setting can get you some pseudo ring mod tones that are pretty weird.

Lots of cool things with the Sweep Echo as well.

When I got mine from starcastic he had a great chorus sound pre-programmed in one of the memory banks.

Same goes for the M series as well. though you also get one more use those same settings on the echo platter model and you get this cool lo-fi strangeness. I figured that out when dissecting this autolux song. The beginning is obviously recording either the lo-fi model or his moog ring mod into the looper doubling the speed and reversed. then the little ebow weedy sounding lead after the starts is guitar or some other instrument run into the echo platter mode with zero delay time and repeats 100% wet with the gain & Wow/Flutter knobs cranked. I find it's really fun to play with this oil can kind of oddness going on. Really spices up basic clean parts :)

DUDE I LOVE YOU THAT'S WHAT I USED THE DL-4 FOR!

"23 Watt Apple Juice" is like one of my favourite Autolux songs... I actually prefer the live version from a long time ago with the vocals and the weird bridge in the middle.

But yeah, there is a specific setting on the Lexicon Vortex that produces the weird ring modulator rhythm that sort of dies out. I bought a Vortex because Failure used them so well, and then found that you just pick the one specific setting on it and it produces that exact ring modulator rhythm at the beginning of the song.

I spent hours and hours and hours in college trying to figure out Greg's Autolux sounds. The DL-4 and the Whammy helped.

Someone asked me the other day who my greatest guitar influence was. I showed them this:
