I'm the proud owner of a Blackout Effectors VST. Love it to pieces. Very versatile.

in the "radical" area i really like Fuzzhugger stuff. the Algal Bloom is extremely versatile, really two or three boxes in one depending how you tweak it. the higher gain circuits--the Great Wall, the AB-Synth--are all kinds of fun, and the Phantom Ring is my go-to stunt racket box. i like Devi's far-out stuff, too...i REALLY regretted having to sell my Truly Beautiful Disaster Dark in one of my Poverty Purges and am going to get another when i'm back on my feet. that was one sick puppy, in the best possible way.

I just finished the BYOC octave fuzz and I love it way more than any muff I've ever had. Even with the octave off.

dallasisacowboy wrote:Alright so, I've been using an old, battered NY Big Muff for quite awhile now (it was my first pedal and to this day, the only fuzz I've ever owned) and it's seemingly kicked the bucket. I've been looking to change things up for awhile and I need some pointers in the right direction. I'm used to Muffs, so a Muff variant would be great or anything that can go from not-so-overbearing to completely overbearing. I guess I'm looking for versatility. I particularly like what I've heard from the Pharaoh and the Musket and the Algal Bloom and AB-Synth and the Dirt Transmitter and Hoof. I'm only looking for one right now but hopefully, my fuzz collection will grow by the end of the summer. All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for your time and help!

All of those boxes are very different. I would suggest the Algal Bloom fist and then work your way through until you find the box that is right for you.

YEAH!
I heard that's what Portugal. The Man's singer does.
I used to use one and keep it all the way down for distortion and turn it all the way up for my foot for fuzziness. Now that I think about it, it really sounds like a fuzz when maxed.

Thanks to the way that goddamn SST sounds, now I NEEDZ a Fix'd Deluxe to go with my Blunderbuss now...

I don't consider most muff platforms to be all that radical, but if I had to pick just one from those you mentioned...
The OG musket's pretty safe...going to be darker than your NYC, and pretty versatile. Sort of like "Intro to Muffs 101; FInding the Muff version that suits you best."
Pharaoh was my go-to for a long time, very wide-sounding and not as scooped as most muffs. Tone controls may take some getting used to, but lots of full-range output. Excellent if you play loud.
Hoof is a beast, just shit-eating grin inducing toanz, but I wouldn't accuse it of being really versatile.
Dirt Transmitter is not very muffy. Great ripping velcro fuzz, and the exploding over-biased tones are great, but I find this to be pretty dark as well.
Peeps here worship them, but I couldn't get into my Algal Bloom...sounded good, but there was a glitchy-ness I didn't dig and couldn't seem to dial out of the tones I liked.
And of course, everything depends on your amp/axe...
Special low-frequency version.
