NGD (Masked Elwood Content)

Post by kosta »

Sooooooooooooooooo...... I got a new Tele'ish guitar from a certain Masked Man. I'm calling it the Motorcaster!

Which started out kinda like this:

Having seen some of Elwood's custom finishes in other threads I found myself a bit curious about getting one for myself. The conversation started around the idea of a Detroit-themed blackguard Tele (with a P90 in the neck) that looked like it had been left behind a machine or a furnace in a factory for the last 30 years. (I'm from Michigan. Industry sorta speaks to me...) And this is where we ended up. I gotta say, this thing blows the doors off of my initial vision and expectation. The Kalamazoo elements (set neck, neck profile, inlays, controls layout) combined with the Fullerton elements (bridge pickup, body shape) give it a really wonderful feel and sound. The bridge pickup is all Tele twang and bite, and that neck P90 (a GFS maybe???) brings more wool than your Granny's knitting circle. Seriously so g'damn thick!!! Kind of unreal actually. And then that weirdo Mosrite'ish German carve and Elwood's blowtorch, rust, gold leaf and decoupage are just a post-nuclear icing on this delicious cake.

Really, really happy with this. Thanks Elwood! :hello: :joy: :omg: :!!!: :hello:

Not normally a fan of block inlays, binding, or artificial relicing, but it's got that industrial vibe you wanted in spades.

Decopage with some vintage Dante's Inferno wood block print copies on a melted antigua finish is calling to me after seeing that though.

^^^ I like the sounds of that! I like the conceptual suture of it.

I'm not super into relic'ing either really, the kind that is meant to imitate years of actual play wear. This seemed different to me somehow though. And I really dig how it looks and feels. It's super super textured, and even a bit flaky. There's Motown and Detroit riots stuff decoupaged on the back of the headstock and on the cavity covers in the back too. Pretty killer. :)

With that guitar and tweed thing, you're going to have to stop dusting/sweeping for a while.

It needs a good honest layer of beneficial neglect to get the vibe perfect.

And I'm not even a Tele guy, but that just works.

That's fucking awesome.
I don't think it counts as relicing at this point...it's beyond the techniques and style of wuss-relicing.

Thanks everyone! this is mos def the fave guitar that i've ever done. it just came out fantastic and i wish it was mine.

i wouldn't call it relicing, at least i don't think of it as such. i tried to make it look like an old tool rather than a used guitar. it 's more just a arty weird conceptual finish. there is no neck/fretboard wear, just a fucked up finish. blah blah blah....but yea, i don't care if it's looked upon as relic'd.

the koolest thing about this was making a mahogany/maple top, set neck guitar sound like a fucking twangy tele. that little piece of the tele bridge plate is very important to the tele spank. it was a bitch at times (as all the good ones usually are) and i think something may be fuct up on it.
it totally sounds like 2 completely different guitars. it bothered me for a while just trying to get the balance right between the 2 pickups. the neck pickup was a major problem but the wool was so intense, it sorta had to stay. and the bridge pickup is perfect tele so it was going nowhere.
i went through countless pickups in the neck position but came back to the GFS. the pole pieces on the filtertrons did not line up with the strings, and that was the case on a few others. so there ya go...
this came together really fast and then i had to level and crown the frets....had no fret files or anything at home so it held me up, not to mention that i really don't like fret work...so i was dreading it TBH. but even that turned out great as i bought all new gear (to leave at home) and polished up my skills, something i've been meaning to do. new tools are king!

it plays like a LP, sounds like a tele on the bridge and a fat cheapo harmony on the neck. what's not to love?

i really want to thank Kosta for bringing the entire idea to the table, pointing me in the direction and yet giving me the freedom to get it where it is. you rock my friend!
