Good to hear, i used piggyback with the brackets and/or a homemade 1x15 back then, and didn't have the issue.

Of course we wouldn't have known to check bias or caps or anything - we just played the old shit and thought it'd last forever.

I am gonna pick up some new tubes but I'm not sure what I should get for back ups, I am thinking just some JJ's because a set of NOS RCA's are gonna cost me more than the amp atm which I'm fine for eventually.

Preamp tubes will do the whistle/noises you're describing; power tubes it's more crackle and lower output.

Remember the backup set doesn't have to be perfect - a set of cheapies for preamps that you just tape to the inside of the head work just fine.

yeah, i have an aluminum briefcase-with-dividers thingy now that i keep everything in, patch cords and picks and capos and all, and i have spare JJ preamp and power tubes in case one of my NOS/used 70s tubes goes to Tube Heaven. it's so handy not to have to hunt around the house when i want to find the Xacto knife handle i use to do the Daevid Allen glissando guitar thing with, or the little wrench to adjust the Strat bridge.

There are also rubber damper rings that are sold to slide over preamp tubes and cut down on microphonics. If you can figure out what hardware store aisle they come from you can cut out the TGP/Tonequest upcharge.
