So...you know.

I read an interview with Kevin Drumm where he was saying he didn't clip the ends of the strings off, and when playing one went right into his eyeball, he was seeing a doctor forever about it....

I just re-strung my SG and LP and went through two sets of strings on both guitars to finally get the job done.

It's almost an art-form in itself to re-string correctly.

Anyone else still have trouble or eventually get better?

I used to have to take it to a music place to get mine restrung, cost me a good $40 each time. :picard: Eventually I stopped being a wuss and tried it myself with wirecutters and a tuner. Best thing ever, went from :idk: to :!!!: in five seconds. Guess it comes to you with practice.

My only issue is laziness. Bass strings suck to buy, and if I jack one up, then it's stupid unpleasant amounts of money to spend. Cheaper to take it to my local chick and have her restring and set my basses up at the same time.

Also, I dunno about you guys, but my primary bass has that straight-from-hell 3 point Gibson/Epiphone bridge.

Shit makes restringing a pain in the ass.
good deals are here.

3 point bridges make me SO DURN ANGRY. Rickenbacker bridges blow too.

It's so incredibly easy but I remember when it wasn't. I shall break it down for you now using the low E and Gibson 3 + 3 as an example:

1. Run string to appropriate tuner, hole facing horizontal aka perpendicular in relation to the neck. Go about 2" past the post you intend to string to leave appropriate slack. It's here, this 2" zone, that you'll make your first bend.

2. Bend string, making 90º angle towards the tuners, feed it through until it snugs up to that angle, then grab each end, bending both in a smooth clockwise motion around the post (counterclockwise for high strings).

3. You can do a couple things here:

a) What I do.... After wrapping 'em around the post and getting a nice bend on each side, anchor the string with index finger near the nut, maintaining tension. Use the other hand + stringwinder to wind them shits. Clip off end, optional but wise. Done except for stretching.

OR....

b)Continue that clockwise motion all the way around, wrap the end back under itself, then anchor back over top headed opposite direction, forming a wrap by pulling tight to hold. Some think this "anchor" is more stable. Looks sloppy as shit and doesn't hold much better if your shit's setup well so to each their own regarding this step....

4. Tune up, then start stretching them sonsabitches. Fret at 5th, then pull string up with free hand while moving it up fretboard. Retune, then repeat at 3rd and 2nd fret.

Good to go! :thumb:

+1
When I'm tuning up the high e, I always turn the guitar away from me out of reflex.

For real, this shit is dangerous. I was sighting a neck yesterday, just placing my eyeballs right next to 6 high tension strings, so careless. Get some shades or some shit, protect them eyeballs people!
