I still suck at re-stringing my guitar

Post by Instant Dan »

And I am not afraid to admit it.

I just re-strung my SG and LP and went through two sets of strings on both guitars to finally get the job done.

It's almost an art-form in itself to re-string correctly.

Anyone else still have trouble or eventually get better?

I think the only times I mess up restringing is when I accidentally use a B for the G, or something like that.

I did, once, play with a group whose guitar player didn't know how to change a string. His mom always took his guitar to a shop to get it strung.
I ended up changing broken strings on several occasions.
This was also the same kid who didn't realize that, just because he was in tune with himself, didn't mean he was in tune with the rest of us.

I used to suck at it, having different strings wound different ways, really thick coils around all the pegs, but one day I decided to read a guide on how to do it nicely, and hey wow, my guitar stayed in tune so much better! It's really easy to do right and it does make a difference. The high e on my jag is just the worst though, the way jag pegs work is fantastic for anything except the high e, which pops out of the peg while you tighten it unless you hold the string in place the whole time. Very uncomfortable.

Every time I string a guitar there's always a vision in my head of the string flying off and slicing into my face.
So...you know. Hope that helps.

+1
When I'm tuning up the high e, I always turn the guitar away from me out of reflex.

It's much easier being a bassist in this regard, especally one that uses flats

Never broken a string, must be doing something wrong
