How to get that fuzz sound

Post by sylnau »

Hey, I realy enjoy the fuzz sound (maybe OD not sure) on Metropolitan Glide by Tom Waits.

Which fuzz/od would you use to get that sound at 1:32?

Would you think Mid-Fi Demo Tape Fuzz would be great for that sound?

Edit: fix video.

Old loud amp??? I don't really think Tom used many pedals (I'm just going off what I've read, not a fan)... Sounds like an old cranked SS amp... Crappy Peavey maybe??? Kinda sounds Mississippi Deltaish and they love Peaveys for that sound...

I'd guess the album sound is a small amp cranked, I agree with univalve that a tonebender-style fuzz with the gain down might get a similar tone. Or a fuzz face with the gain reaally low as well.

Thanks, MKI, that's possible... I'll wait for Dev for some suggestion.
The Skinpimp MKI look interesting, but is there some less expensive option?

Does it always have to be a pedal and not some sort of Guitar / Amp / Mic / Room / Player combo... People like Tom who have been recording forever usually keep it real simple in the studio...

That might just be an amp.. but I'm looking for a pedal that reproduce that sound.

This is Mark Ribot playing on this recording.

Your not talking about the Turntable sound right??? Just the Guitar sound??? Stick your amp in the bathroom and experiment with mic placement... I know pedals can approximate a sound but most of the time it's easier then you think... Do you read Tape Op??? They have good articles online about recording... Not fighting here; I just don't always think XXX pedal is the answer... I know that's blasphemy on an Effect Love Forum but it's straight up grown folk talkin...

That song has...

"Metropolitan Glide" – 4:13

Larry Taylor - Bass
Harry Cody - Guitar
Brain - Percussion
Casey Waits - Turntables
Tom Waits - Vocal, Guitar

Just sayin... I know Mark Ribot plays on some but this is Tom and Harry...

The problem is that I live in a small 2 1/2 appartment. I can't play loud.
You are true, I'm pretty sure I can get those sound out of my amp... but not until I purchase a house. :)

Your right, it's not Marc Ribot, it's Cody and Waits on guitar (my mistake).

This is true, especially with someone experimental like Tom Waits.

I once e-mailed Joe Gore to ask him how he got a certain sound on a Tom Waits record.

His answer? Hollowbody guitar, almost any dirt pedal, small cranked amp, get up real close.

You should stalk your neighbors till you know their every move; then you would know when no ones home and crank it up... I'm in the same position but I went and met my neighbors and told them "I am LOUD if you have a problem beat on the wall"... Now they text me and say what you were just playin sounded good, play it again... Everyone in a metro area has to deal with that... Stick your amp in a closet or the refrigerator or under your bed... It's all good...

i suggest:

devi ever - electric brown or karaoke party

it def sounds like a more fuzz-type overdrive.

you might even be able to get a sound like this with a boost pedal (to being really literal with the "cranked amp" sound without playing loud)...

if you already have a distortion pedal... roll the gain down to zero and dime the volume control.

I'm getting close with my Hydra Overdrive (Liquid Gain) but it's more polite.

I like the idea of a Tonebender MkI.

And what about the Thorn's Peaker?
