When i hear fuzzed/distorted bass, i like when there's the original attack and character.

but sometimes i like less transparent sounds as well :idk:

best sounds..

APC - The Package (might be just well mixed with guitars so i'm not sure... )
QOTSA - Mexicola, You Can't Quit Me Babe
Failure - Heliotropic
Karnivool - Simple Boy (!!!!!!!!)
NIN - Only etc

when i've been recording, i've had some AWESOME results with Woolly Mammoth and MadebyMike Green Muff with midboost. That muff was really awesome. So i'd say make a Muff either with flat mids or a mids knob, they're really awesome for bass... gating can be cool - woolly mammoth was cool as well but more like the "extra sound for a few moments"

I hate the sound of clean blended fuzz, and any time a pedal offers it, I turn it all the way off. As I've said before, it's like playing a game of "just the tip", or trying to be half-pregnant, if you prefer that analogy. If I click on a fuzz, I want fuzz, not fuzz+clank.

...yeah, THIS, I share the sentiment with bigcheaf. First of all, if it's needed for low end, the fuzz is probably weak.

Second, usually the clank with fuzz just doesn't sound good at all. You have to turned the bass tone controls down tp eliminate unwanted clean clank in the first place for it to work. Which doesn't improve the bass aggression a bit. And then ALL is fucked.

I've wondered WHY the bass pedals just can't have a clean blend with a tone controll (low pass filter) dedicated to that clean channel, so it cut's all but the low end if that's what the clean blend is supposed to ensure in there.

However I USE at the moment a Mini Gnomeratron with clean-ish blend and enjoy it. BUT there's always another fuzz or spanking dirt or sub boost /octaver in front of or after that. THAT rocks. :animal:

There's always room for a really good bass overdrive.

I think for cleanish blend on a fuzz a diode lift on the first clipping section of a muff is really nice ala a jumbo tonebender or B&M fuzz unit. Fuzz I sell is a cross between a Fuzz Unit and a Russian Muff.

Just clone the Depth Charge. It's seriously the best sounding bass fuzz I've heard. It actually has good musical tone and not just a bunch of fucking static. Don't get me wrong, I like static too but it must be usable static. Some pedals just sound like poo to me. Over hyped poo. A pedal that is blended correctly is a HUGE plus.

For the love of all that's holy, no more Muff variants. Don't get me wrong - Muffs are great, and there are billions of flavors to be had, but that's the problem. There are billions of builders doing their version of a Muff. Whatever you do, either try for something unique, or base it off a less-well-trodden fuzz of yore. There are plenty of awesome non-Muff circuits that could use some greater mutation / distribution / availability.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't have a problem with a clean blend if it had a good LPF on it, and if it wasn't truly clean, like make it overdriven/slightly dirty or something. Who knows, I'd give it a shot, anyways.

I actually so agree. I think the whole idea of a "effect" that "distorts" you sound needs purity... fuck lets have a "fuzz" that is a 3-way mixer where you have fuzz, octave fuzz and dry all running parallel and with a POWERful filter which has a freq and a amount control for each channel :thumb:

I used to swear by a DOD Death Metal with the bass and mids all the way up, highs on one, followed by a Meatbox. It's definitely not subtle, but it sounds great

This is exactly why I wired my bass stereo. I can run fuzz through the bridge pickup and roll the tone down on my neck pickup. if you do put in a clean blend I second or third the clean blend tone knob

Personally I love clean blends, but thats probably because I run a tube amp very dirty as my "clean tone"

But +1 on the suggestions for a clean blend with a low pass filter and gain.

I think you should make a duel channel bass dirt box, have the "clean blend" channel
be separately foot-switchable from the fuzz

I'd really like someone to make a Buzzaround built for bass. I know EQD makes the Sound Shank, which isn't easily available, and every other "boutique" guitar effects company "makes" one as well, but I'd like to see someone tweak and add/subtract to the circuit to make it a bass fuzz, like Robot Factor/BassFuzz.com did with the Tentacle Love Superfuzz. I think it would be awesome.
