Oh, and also anyone who's written lyrics which have become song-poems.

Mick Jagger is also very underrated as a lyricist. "girl, when you call my name/i salivate like a Pavlov's dog"...that's some good stuff right there, and you KNOW Keef didn't come up with that.

I can't really think of a single lyricist who's stuff I stand behind 100% when it's just words on paper.

That's one of the things I love about Nick Cave. Loads of his lyrics read really nicely without the music. Then on top of that he delivers them like noone else. I do agree with you in general though, it's an important point/distinction.

that's something i really admire about Stills' lyrics...the best ones read as well as poems on the page as they work as sung lyrics.

Boz Scaggs.

:duck:

No, not really. I just like typing his name. "Boz Scaggs." Man, that is a great name.

I know it's twee as hell, but Stuart Murdoch's lyrics on Belle & Sebastian's "If You're Feeling Sinister" were a major obsession for me for a long time.

Blixa Bargeld. I would just read his stuff. Only lyricist I can think of that could just as well be a poet.

That's a pretty great comparison imo...
