So I bit the bullet and ordered an 8 string....

Post by Ancient Astronaught »

Well a while ago i started a thread on drop tuning to octave down drop D, it was an epic failure of a thread that ended in frustration and bitterness.... okay well that might be a slight exageration... but anyways i've been looking for an Agile 8 for a while and i finally found one on ebay that was just what i was looking for, with the correct mods done, with the updated bridge and bridge placement (necessary from correct drop tuning intonation on these guitars), a helpful and informative seller, the perfect price, and a completely custom made pickup to boot! :yay: The guitar is 28.625" scale (i really wanted a 30" but their alot rarer and more expensive) its setup with .11-.80's and a step down from the normal f# tuning, so it's all ready setup in 8 string E standard tuning, which is perfect except the low string i wanted in D. I talked to the guy and there is plenty of saddle adjustment left to intonate the low string and he's upsized the strings to increase the tension all ready and he said in his opinion it should easily be able to handle the low D tuning :!!!: (all though i might need to upsize slightly to a .84 low string) i'm super excited as i will be using this in a 2 man drone project and it brings me back up out of the guitar gutter as i got this guitar because i had finally found a 3 humbucker white Gibson V and when it finally came in i pulled it out and the headstock had a horizontal crack starting at the nut and going for 1.5-2" down the neck under the fret board on both sides which caused the fretboard to lift 1/8".... needless to say i was not happy but the seller was really cool and fedex picked it up and sent it back and i got a full refund (the seller claimed it as damaged in shipping even though there was no damage to the box, but it really wasnt packed properly IMO). I will post pics when it arrives next week! Trolls feel free to flame!

That's sick man...I've been wanting to get one myself.
Baritones/7's can be too restrictive depending on what you want to do, if you keep an open mind you can get really creative with an 8 (outside of the typical meshuggah ripoffs)

What kinda pups are installed? I hear blackouts are the way to go.
There are some that call me...morningstaru?

It's a custom made SD 8 string full shred with ceramic magnets with a black outs cover installed on it. From the way he eloquently described the tone im excited, this guy def knew what he was doing. Trust me there will be no djent or chugga-chugga in what i will be doing ;) just super low tuned 5+ string chords played painfully slow through 3 fuzzes 2 delays and 2 reverbs... Look out MEC i'm coming for ya!

Exactly why I want a baritone/am going to stick heavy strings on my jag and rock out low tunings. :thumb: Sounds totally cool dude, I've wanted to at least try an 8 for a while. Will you be using a bass amp/cab?

I've wanted an 8 for a while because i have really long "piano fingers" and alot of six stringers feel tiny in my hands and 7 strings just never cut the cake. I was originally going to be using a sunn 300t tube bass head until i bit the dust and now needs around 500$ in repairs and i can't justify spending the loot when i have my 200watt Dunwich coming in March, which will provide me all the low end i will ever need. As far as cabs i will mainly be using my 6x12 and 3x15 emperor guitar cabs, the 12's for midrange and cut, the 15's for holding down the low end.

My bandmate has the 30" Agile 8-string and loves it. He has it tuned to drop C (or B) with two bass strings an octave lower than the guitar. Soooo CGCGCFAD or BGCGFAD or BGBGCFAD.

I've been wondering what other tunings could be useful, I'm not sure how out there i'm trying to go with. Do you know of any helpful resources for extended range guitars? sevenstring.org doesnt seem like my kind of people but they do have alot of good technical info.

Sounds pretty epic all around, makes me GAS for building a baritone V that I dreamed up a while ago

Handling that kind of low end will be on the list of very important shit for your amp

I smell a split 7".

I'd like to slow things down myself.....if I could only find a drummer that didn't think louder meant faster.

hahahaha it's for a 2 person drone project just guitars and drums or guitars and vocals / analog synths depending on the song and or gig. We want a project that we can play shows with on short notice, the AA bassist isn't always available especially on short notice. Our drummer books / promotes shows and gets offers alot and he hates turning them down so we are starting to explore an idea we've had for a while but never did anything with. I'm just happy that i'm being encouraged to play massively downtuned with my full amp rig.... :yay:

*edit* oh and btw i wanted purposely to play in 8 string drop D so that if we did find a bassist it would be alot easier to match tunings, tuning a bass to f# is not that easy, tuning a 4 string bass to drop d is extremely easy....

Psh, what kind of bassist wants to play in the same octave as the guitarist?

A pussy, that's who.
