Favorite Delay & Why

To throw in some more digitals, I've used a Boss DD5 for 15 years and I love it, but I tried a Hardwire DL8 yesterday and it kinda blew me away. The sound was outstanding, at least in the 20 minutes I fucked with it. The Hardwire reverb sounded excellent as well. I won't be picking either up because I have a Line 6 M9 and it has a multitude of delays/verbs that I've barely got my head around yet, but I needed to tell someone how good the DL8 is.

I haven't been able to find another delay with as much definition in the notes. I'm usually not a fan of delay.

Of current production stuff, really like the Digi Time Bender. Analog, tape, and the dynamic analog work very very well, reverse is useable, and it's got extremely decent headroom and control ranges. The headroom issue is usually a killer for me on a lot of units, I have a tendency to run very hot signal.

The built-in harmonizer for the delay tracks relatively well to boot and is useful with tweaking.

I got mine when it was substantially more expensive than now, and don't regret it at all. Used it's an absolute steal.

Time bender- which I realize I say on every delay thread- It is very very awesome.
Got a Subdecay Echobox recently and it is a monster, kills my old memory boy and has basically the same features, plus a trails funtion.
Also: I own 3 different Ibanez/Maxon Delays and try to snatch them up when I can, haven't played one that you couldn't get very good useable sounds out of.

Disaster Transport Sr. PERFECT for bass, the delays actually cut through a mix when you need them too, but you can dial back the tone if you want a washed out sound too. That tone knob is a secret weapon. The modulation is very unique to it's own too. The variable rate is a great feature to have. Cool oscillations too if you do that type of thing. GREAT PEDAL!

How close is the Memory Boy to the DMM sound?

They are miles away. As someone who has owned both at the same time, I can say that they sound nothing alike. The DMM is my all-time favorite analog delay....... the MB sounds like rubbish in comparison. The MB is pretty good for wacky sounds using the modulation.

Thanks dude! I knew the Deluxe Memory Boy was too good to be true. I'm leaning toward the El Capistan, but every time I look at the Brigadier I have second thoughts. Maybe I should just get both.

I think that you may be overstating this a bit ... granted, it's tough to depend on youtube vidz, but the direct head-to-head comparison vids I've seen, they sound close enough that it's not huge. I currently own a DMB, and it's been a couple years since I've played a DMM. But there's not a terribly huge difference in the sound quality that I noticed.

Favorite Delay & Why

I like Maxons, I have a old AD900 [I've actually owned 2], I love the sound is why, if I was going to get a new delay I'd get a AD-999 pro

How about the Boss DD-5? How does it compare to the DD-3 or DD-7?

the tc flashback is a good all in one pedal, but if you're looking for crazy self oscillation this will not work. It's tame in that respect, so i sold mine.

I had a timeline, but it does way too much.

Right now i have the el cap, which is super awesome. It does so much and gives you lots of control.

the DMB is one of my favourite delays as well. the modulation is truly crazy, you can make it change delay time/pitch by its own built-in lfo thingy.

i also really like the digidelay. great for its price, and i have a way of turning it into a bitchrush delay/looper.

I don't know what difference there is between the DMB and the MB (if any), but I can definitely hear the difference between the two in those videos. It's more pronounced in person. The DMM is warmer and the modulation is lush (gotta use those cliche gear tone catch-words), and the repeats on MB have a little more high end on the repeats, but not clarity like a digital delay, still has an analog feel. He's also spot on with the modulation of the MB. There is a wider range, but it gets a little too crazy for my test. The MB always felt like a delay that midfi would make if they were to make a bit more "normal" sounding delay with how wacky that modulation can get.

But again, no experience with the DMB. That's one I always wanted to try, but never had the chance.

I'll agree with you that the repeats on the DMB are a bit brighter than the DMM. I just don't think that it's such a big difference that I would say they are nothing alike or call either one rubbish in comparison with the other, regardless of which you prefer.
