Hmm... when I was doing a virtual build of my Tele neck earlier today, Warmoth offered a satin nitro finish on the neck... that's what I would prefer, too.

Yerp, here it is right here:

"Our satin finish is a NITROCELLULOSE finish; the appearance is dull or matte. This is a more functional type finish which is appreciated by some for its faster, slicker feel." (their caps even, not mine)

well at least in the past it wasn't offered...my guitar was built at least 3 or 4 years ago.

and yea.... guitar mill does great work as well.

:thumb: that all rosewood neck is gorgeous!

I love satin finish on necks too but I find that it gets pretty slick/glossy from wear. I have a Maton BB1200JH, my first satin finish guitar and probably my favorite instrument, but those slick spots appear in no time.

CBA713 wrote:Yeah, ebony was also a choice I was considering... that would at least guarantee me a pretty much black neck. Any ideas about an ebony fingerboard on a mahogany neck? I'm planning on choosing mahogany for everything, FYI, because my Les Paul Faded Special w/P-90s is all mahogany. Not sure if it's a good idea, but I don't see why it wouldn't be.

My Les Paul Custom is all mahogany with an ebony fretboard, it's superb and about as black as I've seen on a fretboard. Ebony is also super smooth, low maintenance, and doesn't dry out as quickly as rosewood. I prefer ebony but all my other guitars are rosewood, ebony is a little harder to come by as a stock option, but a great choice!

No warmoth yet, been thinking about getting a neck for my p-bass though. Anyone with that sort of thing as well?

mathias wrote:Man, I'd rock a Tele with no pickguard, no neck pickup, no controls. Just a side jack and a straight-signal bridge pickup. Like a stripped-down Esquire.

Make it neck pup+vol only and I'm right there with ya.

they've been doing ebony boards on mahogany necks, and necks of every other kind of quality wood for centuries, literally. it's been the wood of choice for classical stringed instrument fingerboards forever because of its durability, density, and extremely tight grain, and the high-end option on custom guitars and top-of-the-line models (e.g. Les Paul Customs, which have mahogany necks) as long as i can remember.

I plan on building a baritone Mustang this summer, though it won't look like a traditional mustang at all...

Mahogany body, rear routed control cavity
Two humbuckers (tbd)
Hipshot bridge
28" warmoth baritone neck, maple fretboard and neck

Wait, 28"/30" scale mustang baritone? Shouldn't that just be a 6 string Bronco bass, technically? :thumb:

Do you know of anyone that offers a 30?

I'll probably tune to A, or the lowest I can go without things getting too muddy

Very nice, how does that neck pickup work? Can you only switch it along with the bridge or does it work ok on its own in that position? :wha?:

Tele is goorgeous!

I've been wanting to make a blonde, maple neck tele with p90s for ages (and don't have the tool/skillz to full on make it myself), but I've never had the money when I was srs planning, and never remembered to do it when I had the money... One of these days.
