Yeah, I was gonna suggest a Jaguar HH, the old one with the switches. I got mine for $400 used.

Squiers of today are RUBBISH! Made with 4 piece plywood bodies, rubber necks, and scrape metal for frets. You can't slide up and down the neck without scraping up your fingers. I give it 6 months and the action is 2 inches high. And the pickups are microphones wired into a transistor radio. The pickup switch is an AM/FM switch and the tone knob is a freq. dial.
Epiphone is much better and made for the long haul. They have really put a lot of options into the series too, competing with the vast selection of Squiers.

This is all true. As much as a GAS for a jagmaster or the duo sonic, I've yet to touch one that plays half decently. It's so depressing. I remember getting a chinese squier as my first guitar...to date, it's probably one of the best guitars I've owned.
Epiphone is making some great shit...The sheratons and some of their higher end SG's are some of their nicest guitars. Nice hardware and solid pickups.

Ive never played an epiphone that i actually enjoyed. save for an epi dot studio and one or two les pauls. but i find that the quality of some of squier's higher end models are comparable or better than some mexi fenders

You're describing the Johnny Greenwood sig model, which I do want.

The Samick Greg Bennett line has really impressed me if you can find any used.
I use an Ultramatic of some sort and it is amazing with low tunings. I changed the pickups to an Ibanez infinity in the neck and a GFS retrotron in the bridge though.

I'd be looking at a classic vibe tele or if you can find the two p90 squier tele custom II you'd be laughing. Great guitars like a league above your regular squier. Have a classic vibe bass here that was about half the price and twice the bass as my old MIM jazz used to have a the tele custom too and regret selling it.

Indeed!
I have a Squier Classic Vibe '50s Tele, which is awesome for the price, and pisses all over the MIM standard tele I used to have. To be truthful, it's every bit as good as the Baja tele I have, I just like the chunkier neck on the Baja most of the time.
The CV teles are definitely worth a look if you're looking for a good cheap tele.
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.
