I thought about how most bands I listen to keep a heavy or at least "ILF Worthy" pedalboard. And I found it funny that The Vines studio work has a lot of layering/effects but live he just has a metalzone for distortion and maybe another boss modulation pedal.
Now obviously any pedal can be used to create a proper sound...
What are some bands you love but were surprised they had such a simple or maybe even sub par board/rig?
wwwwwaaaaaaaait wait wait wait.......you know a girl that asked about pedals??????
Yeah, hold on here. No way!

One of my friend's band Sydonia has an amazing studio sound, but live the guitarists use Bugera heads with crappy ebay cabs and cheap-arse Behringer multi effects
As a bit of a pedal snob, this disgusts me, but they are still able to produce a very decent live sound, I just have to force myself not to look at the gear

Re: Bands you love that have "tame" pedalboards
i'm pretty sure Nicole of mr. Gnome just uses a boss OS-2, distortion, and something i forgot, and two loopers (i'd discount them)
Sonny Sharrock was mostly straight up amp toenz if i remember.
Townshend just rocked the superfuzz for the majority of the 70's, and even recently basically just used a dynacomp and an OD-1.
GBV was straight up amp toenz when i saw 'em in oberlin.

I don't believe Victor Villarreal (Cap'n Jazz, Owls, Ghosts and Vodka, Noyes) or Sam Zurick (Joan of Arc, Make Believe) used any effects, with the possible exception to an overdrive/distortion.

I suppose this band could also be about bands you love that don't use any fuzz or effects at all. I love Noah and the Whale and early Violent Femmes.
I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure Jawbreaker has a simple set up.
Yes.

When I saw Lightning Bolt Gibson had a Boss Blues Driver (for the record I think it's amazing), Boss Overdrive, and Boss ODB-3 and a Whammy 4.

One band I played with called The Templetons used a Blues Driver and borrowed my amp for a show... made me take my amp home and tweak with it to get the huge fat sludgey fuzz they got out of it.

+1!!!!!
Never have seen more than a Distortion + on stage. And the old Korg plug in tuners with pitch pipe option. I've read in studio though they used any and everything they could get their hands on.
