Bands you love that have "tame" pedalboards

I was showing this girl The Vines first two albums and she asked what pedals Craig used. I laughed and said a Boss Metal Zone. I thought about how most bands I listen to keep a heavy or at least "ILF Worthy" pedalboard. And I found it funny that The Vines studio work has a lot of layering/effects but live he just has a metalzone for distortion and maybe another boss modulation pedal.

Now obviously any pedal can be used to create a proper sound...

What are some bands you love but were surprised they had such a simple or maybe even sub par board/rig?

cool idea for a topic of discussion...though I admit I don't have much to contribute, as I don't actually know the rigs/pedalboards of most of my favorite guitarists...

I think Black Tambourine only used a DS1 and maybe a verb.

Jus Oborn from Electric Wizard only uses a Boss Fz-2 and a wah. I wondered how they sounded so huge for a long time till I finally got one.

AC/DC - no pedals I think
Led Zeppelin - besides for a fuzz or occasional blue box, just straight Marshall
Bob Dylan - he usually just played Acoustic
Yngwie Malmsteen - he has two pedals, 10 amps, and 10 cabinets
Santana - just saw him live - didn't see him use any pedals not even a wah

I'll probably think of more later.

Rory Gallagher. Most of his stuff was Treble Booster > Ac30/Plexi

Mark Linkous. I think he had like a few Boss pedals and an MM4 or something.

Emanuel Ayvas from Emanuel & The Fear. He had a tremolo of sorts and I think a dirt pedal or two.

An assortment of not really guitar related bands who have tame pedalboards spring to mind but they are kind of cheap.

I am fond of Screaming Females. When I saw them, Marissa was using a Boss OC-3, PS-5, DD-3 (or a DD-5), Little Big Muff and a tuner.

Although, I believe she has since started using a SuperCollider.

When I saw Torche, Jonathan Nunez's pedalboard was a tuner and a Russian BMP.

Also, I got blown away by a band called Big Fiction last night, and the bass player's tone was a small, mysterious, unlabeled, one knob box (probably a boost) into a Behringer Vintage Distortion. Now, that was going into a SHITTON of amps. But, still.

Keith Levene from PIL used no pedals or just an Electric Mistress iirc.
JFK from DFA1979 didn't use any pedals live (and I think he only used a chorus in the studio for the feedback in Turn It Out)
Steve Drozd from The Flaming Lips uses a Boss GT8, Line 6 FM4, and a Line 6 DL4 live to recreate everything on the albums.

I thought I'd seen/read of him using an Ibanez Stereo Chorus and occasionally a wah.

early Low: couple delays, the puke green Ibanez ones
Mount Eerie: boss MD-2, digitech digidelay, or none.

That is the antithesis of tame if you ask me

He used some effects later on though, a lot of Boss stuff




He had a BF-2 flanger and a Boss BD-1 Driver, OC-2 and he used a compressor a lot.

As well as the Rangemaster / Hawk booster thing.
