Weird as it may sound, almost all my Jazz and Classical comes from Sonic Youth. I guess weren't it for SY mentioning Sun Ra and Albert Ayler in some Interview I would never have checked out Jazz. Turns out that i prefer other Jazz musicians, but hey, they sent me that way. And weren't it for SY playing a piece by Cornelius Cardew with a corny opening lecture on the composer by Thurston on their Goddbye 20th Century show i would probably never have checked out modern classical music. Glenn Branca who introduced Lee and Thurston (I think) or Terry Riley. I have only discovered that portuguese sound artist Rafael Toral is on NYC Ghosts after I started getting into his music. Oh, and the excellent dutch band The EX have come to my attention because of a record they did together.
Sonic Youth has been a constant inspiration for me. Usually anything associated to SY gets a "worth to check this out" tag. And it's right most of the time.

Washing Machine only got mentioned once I agree with PP about Experimental Jet...great album. Daydream Nation,Sister,Goo,Dirty. nyc ghosts and Flowers is a nice choice,too,Blurz
Just picked up Washing Machine used yesterday. Can't believe I never got it but at the time it came out all my friends owned it so I guess it wasn't a priority. My faves are Goo, Murray Street, Daydream Nation, Dirty, Jet set, A Thousand Leaves, Sonic Nurse. Lee's vocals are always my fave among the three. And I really like the Ciccone Youth record with Mike Watt.

So are you guys not liking their lastest, "The Eternal"? seemed like their "safest" album, i do like it a lot, but it is definitely missing what their pre-Daydream work has.... but to me there's a wisdom to it, if you listen to the layers and the riffs, etc... it's pretty amazing... i considered it one of top albums of the year last year, but a lot of hard core SY fans pan it.....

That's NOTHING. Back when I was in the sixth form in school (16-18 years old), I put "Daydream Nation" on in the common room's CD player. Some younger pupils in the school walking past thought I was a GOTH. I still feel like a kind of musical outcast even now. Wales is such a backwards country.
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.

i get similar reations to sonic youth on my ipod in my sixth form too, people now days just don't seem to get good music
