sonic youth
sonic youth is one of those bands i've been meaning to get into, but i've been putting it off up until around now. and here lies the problem. where in god's name should i start? they have a ridiculous amount of material and i have no clue where to begin listening, so i'm asking everyone's advice on this one.

First their classic Daydream Nation
Then skip right to their newest The Eternal
Then mine out the good stuff in between and you'll get a good sense of who they are
Don't forget to check out their solo works after that
Then become obsessed with jazzmasters and detuning
The above is 100% autobiographical....

perhaps, but at the same time get the commecially successful stuff out of the way, it's more fun to get that over with and then delve into the crazy shit, kind of like listening to Blue Train and Ballads by Coltrane, then bringing home Love Supreme and getting stoned....
TRUST ME.....

Re: sonic youth
I feel the same way as OP.
I touched/played Lee Ranaldo's Jazzblaster last night at an art festival. It was hanging on a string, just kinda floating around and swaying in the wind, hooked up wirelessly to his pedal board making some really beautiful ambient feedback stuffs. Every 20 minutes or so (didn't actually see this, was told by others) Lee would come out and bow a one string, then walk away. Best installation of the night, I could have slept there.

Re: sonic youth
I started with Evol. I can't say if that's a good or bad place to start, but it worked for me. Plus, there is a little Mike Watt on there. That's never a bad thing.
I am moving into your basement from Dr. Scientist's basement. I'll be there in a week.

Nuit Blanche was pretty awesome this time around, I must say. Where was this installation?
As for SY, I got into them thru the album Dirty... it's still one of my favs but my all time, never-gets-boring-no-matter-how-many-times-I-listen-to-it, SY favourite album is Goo, hands-down.
NOW GO! Buy an album (get the artwork) and fucking DIG IT!!!

Same.I actually got a chance to meet him at Nuit Blanche.
He's my friends hero and he kind of scared him. HE WAS COOL.
I didn't know he would be there. I was pretty pleased with his installation.
It was mostly installations too at NB. I was hoping for more stuff.
To OP, my favourite is probably EVOL.
Such an awesome album.
