I associate (early) Autechre and those Loveless bits between songs with sampling and modulation, so I suggest any device that captures your input, can overdub and fucks around afterwards.
For pedals, the boring answer is the Zoia and that other one with the touch screen, but also the Tensor and Timefactor/H9 can be your friend.

For the dirt part, adding dynamics is very important for me, so either you have a voltage starving thingy or an envelope follower in your distortion box.
My favorite is the Boss DD500, because I already have it, but also because you can have a parallel patch doing whatever you like. Here I have my trem/distortion from 1 patch, and in parallel a glitchy one that morphs between delay modes and delay milliseconds: https://morgenmx.bandcamp.com/track/beebop

Also whatever Fennesz and Tim Hecker are using works too, probably max/msp and Rat pedals

Also, as with most things the answer is also usually "a multistomp."
Maybe that EAR analog delay with the fx loop?

I just checked out the Vongon Paragraphs. I don’t know if it fits the bill of requests, but it seems like instant BoC vibes... it’s that softened attack maybe? (not a BoC expert)

from these suggestions i'm realizing that i need:

1. some kind of ring mod--or, god forbid, bit crushing--to make things ugly and angular
2. murky delay
3. ability to control pitch on the delay with an EXP pedal.
BitQuest could do most of these tasks, but not all at once.

I'm not sure this addresses the issue, but I suddenly have a strong urge to try a rubberneck, with a bitquest in the loop, in front of a tensor

This is not helping my "leave things as they are for a bit" approach, as while I have a BitQuest on the board, the Tensor and Rubberneck are currently in their boxes, and it would take a lot of shuffling to get them out.

It does sound like it would be fun though, so it's probably only a matter of time before I try it. :thumb:

You're welcome :)

Please report back after you've made the universe implode :)

Sold my rubberneck cause the fx loop was kinda unpredictable, the tone/gain/level controls would start to weirdly interract, making it really finnicky to dial in 'conventional' delay sounds with just some pitch shifting or octave on the repeats. Didn't keep my bitquest very long either. I wanted it mainly for the flanger, delay and reverb, with all the other stuff for just the occasional noises. Should be the other way around ofcourse

I'm currently thinking about resting all of the Meris pedals to make room, I've not been using them much lately anyway, though I did have some Hedra on the last album.

The trouble (or fun part) is that it will inevitably end up with me rearranging some of the other pedals as I start wondering whether something might sound better in front of or behind something - THIS WHY I WAS LEAVING THINGS ALONE!!!

So . . .

I removed the Meris pedals, swapped Subdecay M3 for Geiger Counter and put the BitQuest in the Rubberneck loop.

With the BQ in its current state of fuzz and filter it bleeds through even when the Rubberneck is switched off, and didn't appear to react to the repeats when switched on :(

So I've taken it out for now and put the Hedra in the loop with the BQ following later.

Rather than take another crappy photo the current chain is :

Feedback/looper with Miku
Rattle Crow (self built)
Geiger Counter
Judder (I might try this in the Rubberneck loop next)
Wurhm
Mood
Revolver
Rubberneck + Hedra
Mod Rex
Komorebi
BitQuest
Count To 5
Superball
Marshmallow
Happiness
Ghost Fax
Fabrikat
Fideleater
stamme[n]
Rainbow Machine

Some of which will form the basis of the next album, then I'll change again :)

With the Rubberneck’s loop, a compressor can help keep things from spiraling out too much. Probably worth messing with its placement among the effects in the loop, but last is the intuitive place for me.

I don't have a compressor.

I'll try it on clean in the loop next time I swap stuff about and I reckon the Mood will be fun in there too.

The Hedra is cool but it does need the mix control to be quite low to stop it swamping everything (which is often the case in normal use).
