Are we gonna talk about this Boss SY1000?

well, okay, yes me :idk:

if you can listen through the demo (in both senses)...
is this too much guitar synth? still not enough?
is guitar synth even a topic of broad interest?
why skip the SY666?

i didn't like the demos for the sy300, but it was all just preset wank as far as i could hear.

could this beast change the game?

(personally i'm happy dialing in a vaguely synthy tone on lesser pedals and running them through effects)

how about you?

still holding out for sy10000?
rather have a single voice SY69 that's more than the thin sounding preset box SY1?
just not impressed?

:snax:

I have a lot of thoughts on this hot subject. 1st question... is that one dude Rob Scallops? I only watched the 2 min video so far and... WOW I DID NOT LIKE THAT!
The dudes playing and the flashing lights were great! I thought the drums were mixed in awfully loud for a synth pedal teaser (someone tell me I'm wrong please... I'm watching with head phones on a borrowed laptop. Please tell me it's the sound card or some shit). The pedal sounded pretty bad though.

If they did not improve upon those raw oscillators... there is just no hope for the SY larger pedals. Filling this under my "check in, in 4 years and see used prices" category.
I'm almost 100% sure no one on this forum is going to get one brand new at retail price.

More knobs, more foot switches, sleeker profile. Definitively a tactical upgrade. Going through the technical demo now.

About to "soy up" this thread @Dandolin. Stupid question... what is the price? That does change a lot. The SY300 was VERY EXPENSIVE when it first came out. The lowest I saw one sell for second hand was $350 (it was on Craigslist in Long Island... so while I 'could' drive there... it just wasn't worth it with traffic and tolls -> that alone would have added around $50 - $75). EDIT #1:   It's $1K!!! No prosumer / consumer is getting this.

This sums up my feelings as well.
Dandolin wrote:if you can listen through the demo (in both senses)...
I admire the enthusiasm but there is just not enough substance that is 'synthesis' in this pedal. I always WANT to WANT to like a new synth pedal but boss keeps shitting the bed in application. I expound upon this further down.

The dudes in the video seem cool though. It's Rob Scallops but the Australian version. A+ for effort on the marketing end.
Dandolin wrote:is this too much guitar synth? still not enough?

I don't think it is anymore (lol I just bought a guitar synth on Monday  ) cause synths are so cheap now. I've said this a thousand times... you can get a Blofeld for $300 used now a days.
Dandolin wrote:i didn't like the demos for the sy300, but it was all just preset wank as far as i could hear.
The raw oscillators they give you control of in the SY300 just sound awful and not in an endearing way. It's like eating an old mayonnaise sandwich. It's bland and bad.
Dandolin wrote:could this beast change the game?
We've all see stranger things happen this past decade so maybe? I don't think anyone on ILF (I read everybody and anybody's posts... I know... you know that I know...) is going to get this. I don't know the gear page that well or talk bass. This doesn't seem like it would tickle anyone's interest in what is going to be 2020. I honestly don't think price will dictate it either because of stuff that is easier to use and cheaper (assumption).
Dandolin wrote:(personally i'm happy dialing in a vaguely synthy tone on lesser pedals and running them through effects)
This is objectively the correct answer. It bothers me when a pedal is marketed as a synth pedal and big feature is the delay. A lot of players (even off ILF) have like three delays at their disposal anymore. Why on Earth... I don't know.
Dandolin wrote:how about you?

I really admire the enthusiasm and the tactile design. The sequencer is really cool too. But for a synth pedal... there is not much synthesis sounding things going on. I'm not expecting a sophisticated engine... just an engine that does sounds outside of effects boss already makes (WHOA WE GOT A DISTORTION AND DELAY... No No No... pretend you don't already have those).

Sorry, I'm all hoped up on cold brew and angst    On one positive note.. the filter sweeps blow the SY-300 out of the park. They really improved that sound.

I'm still trying to get my brain around the SY300, so maybe the oncoming price dip will allow for that soon?

Somebody here posted a vid of the 300 out to 4 separate amps (heavenly) .......or maybe that was an Akai Headrush

But to 1000 anything seems like it's the end of the line, though - this series definitely could start from scratch & maybe more than 100 people would buy one :hobbes:

However, this, along with the recent BOSS multi-pedal "upgrades" seems like where they're at now?

The best question: at $999, who is this device actually for?

Seriously... if anyone gets this brand new or used... you have to let the world know how it is. Per a question on Lovetone pedals, I stand by that no pedal is worth a thousand dollars. And this one is literally a thousand dollars (technically more with sales tax depending on your state USA ). I'm having fun doing math now and love the idea of someone getting 20% off, getting NJ Sales tax of 7% and when all is said and done, you still spent $856 for this pedal.

$harkToootth
not Rob Scallops - a UK fusion duder that does a lot of Boss work, Ashley someaught I believe (Alex, actually  ), though he is looking mighty scallopy

I love the in ten cities in music, but I might need a more laid back presentation to figure out wtf is up with your megapedal, Boss....

but, yeah, thanks for your may cogent points! :zen:

kinda wish they had done something with the HRM (harmonic resonance modeling? humanoid robotic merger? hostile rucksack management?) that was in the VG99 - that seemed quite promising.... There definitely seem to be some other things from the VG99 (alt tunings and such) that I'm not sure were in the SY300. :idk:
$1000, though, for me is a signal to get the Fishman Triple Play up to speed and get serious about some non-gear-related debauchery. :doom:

also, apparently, I have a late-blooming talent for frying pedals, so I am not a good eggs-in-one-basket candidate.

also also - that drone video is simultaneously awesome and exhibit 1 for "just get a freaking synth" - Blofeld being an excellent choice :joy:

I have fried two pedals in my time... but I am also getting more and more careless / absent minded so I imagine more are to come. Honestly, same reason why I don't drive a nice car (not that I have that option  anyway) but if something happens to mine... so be it.

Yes, again, synths used to be either rare or prohibitively expensive. With this post 2013 renaissance... neither is the case anymore. (I am very much generalizing).

Agreed with you on the features... have a synth engine. Don't just make it a supped up modelling pedal that can do 'synthy tones'.

more cogency :joy:

i just listened to "rabbit in your headlights" thrice successive, so i am not you best bet for cogency.

although, then again, maybe there's your market answer, Boss - xtian suburbanites (they got money to burn)....

when it's not on sale. thus the reluctance to go high on "guitar synth" pedals.

though, if you pooled what i've spent on "cheaper" synth pedals :picard:

I actually like that. A lot. I know enough of the differential between Roland/Boss product demos and end user results that I’m sure I could be quite happy with the sounds from that box.

The trick for me would be running it as a parallel rather than primary device. I know that’s a bit :?: or  for many people at that price, not having it as the center of everything. But it adds a lot of things my current gear can’t do, and if it’s like the SY-300, the synth architecture should be open enough for creative sound design. Having that set as an alternative or add on would make me very happy.

No, I don’t want to pay full price, but if I had that around in fun money at release and couldn’t get a discount, I probably would.
