Gear Trend predictions: PERFECT VISION EDITION

Post by Inconuucl »

We were pretty on the money last time we did this.

My guess (more like an observation) is that clean full featured pedal amps. Judging by Strymon and Dr. Sci's.

I've also seen a growing trend of weirder effects that I'm actually expecting it to burst tbh.

Wild wish: pitch tracking ring mod with offset and portamento on the modulator. :snax:

I dunno man.

IMO the gear industry has kind of ran out of good ideas and it's not their fault. Shit has just been done to fucking death. So, there's a lot of pedals that get released these days that feel kind of incomplete to me or that people try and one up the weirdness. I kind of lost interest in weird sounds because of how many other people are doing it now. LOL. It feels so fake to me. Like the whole boutique world was swept up by corporate fucks or something and we are stuck in a twilight zone episode where everyone will continue to release the same variations of pedals until the matrix finally breaks.

These days I buy simply to try something but the weird shit annoys the fuck out of me most days so I'll buy your average stuff. I hate most of the odd shit now. It makes me mad for some reason. Like no one wants to play their goddamn instruments anymore which is weird and scary to me and I want to shake my fist at the sky and scream.

This year I predict a step back from crazy effects but I'm probably wrong.

You're not alone in that. Hell, listen to the latest Tera Melos record and you'll notice that Nick Reinhardt had the same thoughts he barely uses any effects on the record. There's going to be a lot of carnage once the weird pedal bubble bursts.

I mean on the cheaps when it all blows up. :)

For real though. I love pedals. I feel like a lot of people are kind of de-evolving into laziness though with pedals. Some of them do so much now that you don't even need to be good or decent at playing. LOL! Sometimes you can't fucking tell! hahahaha! I know this for a fact and have worked almost exclusively on my technique for the past two or three years. I'm actually working on guitar right now, which I never thought would happen. I've been using a semi hollowbody and honestly there's a lot of times I can't see a use for anything other than some dirt and mild modulation.

I have the Chase Bliss/Cooper FX Gen Loss for instance. I love the thing. Absolutely stellar pedal. Sounds amazing. Does rad stuff and make me go "wow". I pulled it off board and set it aside the other night. Why? Well. It's fucking great but I'm using it as a low pass filter, which is a huge waste. So, I just adjusted other settings and took it off and replaced that with an octave pedal (which I will use a lot). SO, I'm staring at this expensive, limited pedal and I'm thinking "why did I buy this, I knew I wouldn't use it?". LOL! Then if I keep it, it ends up in my filing cabinet for the day I want to use it. Not a wise purchase and it has nothing to do with the pedal at all. It has to do with my "OH MY GOD I HAS TO HAVE IT" mentality that always wins. Fuck me.

Anyway. My point is. I want to play my instrument, that's my preference. I used to not care, but now if I can't hear some of the clean, it pisses me off. I know. I'm old. hah

the new doctor scientist pedal looks pretty cool. I predict there will be a resurgance of pretty cool pedals.

In other words I agree with you earlier in the thread: I think there will be an ebbing away from Over The Top pedals soon, less emphasis on kitchen-sink weird and more focused tools for making noises and music.

Also I found your ILFMAS card the other day  Still the best. It's going on the mantle once December hits.

Fingers crossed. Seems pretty likely too, but I probably would have said that last year as well.

This.

A good decade or so ago the pedal market exploded, and somehow we ended up with such a huge offering of aweseome weird pedals that everyone's spending 1000s of dollars on glitchy/synthy/whatevery pedals, and the vast majority of the owners never get out of their bedrooms and basements, let alone to perform something that an audience is more shocked or impressed by than they used to be back in the pre-booteek days.

It's not like a ton of mind blowing new guitar bands and artists have popped up thanks to chase bliss and strymon...There's just a lot more youtube demos and online reviews out there than there used to be :idk:

Midi programmable patches or internal swicthes for subtle tone changes, having 8 different $200 fuzz pedals on a single pedal board...That's all a big deal for us pedal nerds, but that stuff isn't what makes or breaks a good recording or gig.

Not to get too soap boxy here, I guess I'm just predicting the end of this overly awesome trend. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing we've reached the summit of glitch/filter/synth/shimmer effects, and overly tweakable pedals in general. I'm still a punk at heart, maybe that's why I'm secretly nostalgic for the fugazi/slint type of approach, and wouldn't mind a world with less untalented Nick Reinhart Omar Roddriguez wannabes obsessing over their gigantic pedal boards :)

Semi drunk here, don't mean to offend anyone

I’m probably a loner here but I think we’re at the beginning. Pedal companies don’t stay in business by offering the same pedals as always and never creating something new.

There will be lots of re-hashes (Westwood, cheese ball, etc) and lots of looping/ bedroom banging (mood, blooper, plasadk. Ezhi is coming back, Alexander looks like some cool stuff is coming)

Lol I just joked on a discord today that glitch/stutter/loop is the new BLOOZ LAWYERZ.

I can def see a move towards less effect use in the near-ish future.

I think all the limited edition, small run, rare bullshit is actually starting to sour more people which could also lead to more people cooling off on buying so much shit (myself included).
