Help me find a standalone filter for my synth rig

Post by WORMDIRT »

Is this a thing?
I have a Roland d50 (I'm in love  ) as the main synth for my (mostly) tabletop house/ambient/whatever setup but I need to filter them pads

I was thinking I could get a eurorack or 2 and have a tiny Euro setup, but I'm not too keen on diving into the $$ and obsession that is modular.

:idk:

How portable/durable does it need to be? Korg Monotrons are cheap and have an aux in to that delicious MS20 filter...

Oh snap, I totally forgot about those, I'll probably grab one just cause.
Cheaper is better, but something that I'll not have to upgrade from would be better. ~$100 would be perfect.

The best filter I could recommend around $100 would be a used Source Audio Stingray. On the Stingray, you can engage two adjacent modes at once. It also does phasing. If you want a smooth multi-mode filter, that's a good choice.

My current fave is the Lida Machine (about $205 on sale weekends). If you want something with a lot of movement, the Lida has a gorgeous sound. With independent filters that play off each other, you get a less static, pseudo-random type of pulsing throb---does trem and sputtering warbles well. The Lida has more body, but they're really quite different in terms of what they offer.

The stingray seems to be floating around $160-200
I'm thinking I might just get a wasp filter and mount it for that price.

The monotrons are quite noisy. I cannot really recommend them for this purpose. They are cool toys, though.

After looking up the Wasp filter, suddenly I'm totally in love

And also the option to pair it with a Behringer Tube Monster ($50) and another Wasp on on the other side? Not a Pretty Years, but pretty close? (The less modular I get into the better, tho) :?:

edit: Looks like MSL is making a Wasp In a Box at the moment:

I think an MSL wasp is the front runner for me right now, unless there is an ms20 in a box that runs on 9v for sale somewhere
