Here's where I am for now. Might do a count to 5... kind of forgot about them. Haven't tried one and I'd really like to. Apologies for the cross posting, but who cares?

I definitely wasn't trying to discount your opinion on an exciter. I think it's an excellent idea. I was just offering a different exciter as an option. The Divaricator is so much more versatile than the one you posted but it's not a comp/exciter. It however does a a lot in regards to exciter pedals and can be used in a non traditional sense as well.

I'd say this ought to be a serious contender for anyone interested in exciters.

I feel like you need an octave/pitch shift pedal, an Ehx Pitch Fork to be precise. Seems blander than previously mentioned options but is seriously versatile with all it's modes, the up/down/both switch, the blend knob and the latch/momentary toggle. You could even coax whammy tones out of it with an external expression pedal.

I always have 4 to 6 pitch shift/octave pedals on my board and always at least 1 of these is a Pitch Fork.

Maybe... I'll look into some demos. Only pitch pedal I've had was the wizard. I really liked it for doing sort of cute, quirky things and drones, but never actually did any songwriting with it. This led me to think maybe I'm just not a pitch pedal guy? Like I would try to set it to mostly normal settings and never came up with anything I really was into.

If you feel that a compressor is excessive, than just replace it with this. The compression is very subtle with this, and it's true strength lies in the harmonic accenting and tone shaping. Between my Engineer's Thumb (which is no slouch in the compressor department) and this, the Guyatone will win that "last spot on the board" any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

I know it still leaves an open spot on your board (hence not solving the original premise of this thread), but hey... you just made things better in the process. ;)
Which Guatyone?

The ADA flanger mini one is a good choice. You can get vibe-ish settings and also tremolo like stuff too.
Also a second delay with nice modulation. The Meet Maude can be used with a very short delay time 100% wet as a nice lofi vibrato.

He's talking about the Guyatone PS-021. Exciter/comp.
