You were saying you wanted to play doom and oldschool types of stuff right? Id say look at things with 15s they are the oldschool sound and you can find them cheap because of all the 10's love that has been going round for....... ever....

Where...? Look everywhere. Music shops, Pawn shops, CL, forum classifieds ect..

Alright, so a single 15" or maybe a 2x15...probably 200watt head? or were you talking combo?

Looks ok as in almost too good to be true way, I fear VERY cheap gear a little to be honest.. Shame you can't play through it first to see how it sounds. I've played through PA cabs before and gotten a good sound..

What is shipping on the bugger eh? I bet it's going to be almost half or more then the cost of the cab.

Are you in a place that isn't close enough to any music shops with any ok deals?

the shipping is $50....i watched a video demo of a guy playing his bass through a mixer into it and it sound pretty good (go to seismicaudio.com) but my church has 2 of them they don't use...and i'm going to see if i can get em...if not there is 1 local guitar/bass store and he has a Peavey 2x10 Combo amp for $300 brand new. is that a good deal?

+1 on music shops.

I've had good experience with small music shops. Around here they tend to sell used gear for good prices (not fantastic deals but you have the advantage of being able to come back and tell them if they sold you crap). Usually people in Music Shops make you feel like ass but in the end it pays off being able to try the stuff. I bought my first Amp used in a music store and have been happy with it for years. I bought my guitar in the same store after trying every one they had and it's still my only electric guitar after 9 years. Well, I had a small affair with a Jaguar but I sold that after 2 months.

Great points in this thread!

Buy used.
Trys b4u buys.
15"s > 10"s (imo2)
head + cab = win.
Combos = less than win.
and NEW STRINGS!

I have tried several brands of strings and always come back to these

I'd second the Rotosound Jazz flats reccomendation, and I'd recommend looking on CL for old 70's solid state stuff like Sunn and Acoustic. You can get pretty doomy for pretty cheap, and they get really loud too. Then, just get a 2X15, and you're set! (that is, until you get into fuzz pedals................)

...bigger cones for more meaty low end and down tuned drones. Smaller cones for more exact, sharp impact and keeping the sound tight, and the bigger You want it to sound the more You'll want the cones.

I started with a vintage 1X15 back then for heavy rock & aggressive progressive, switched to a 1X15 + 1X18 for more low end and Doom in mid nineties and eventually more and more fast paced BM gigs and tricky progressive things decided to add a 4X4 to that but... welll, didn't feel like I really needed the massive 15 + 18 any more when usually a 4X10 does the trick.

SO.. I'd say... take as many different types of cabs You think You can manage to take from a gig to another. :animal:

What comes to electric instruments in general, the mics and the pots and/or the possible preamp are what gives your instrument the sound of its building materials, delivered through the strings. It's cheaper than to buy a new instrument if the bass fits in Your hand and is build of actual tone wood. BUT You might also find another Ibanez with a similar neck - they have, I believe, a dozen or so bass models to upgrade the bass of Your choice, don't they? :thumb:
