...bigger cones for more meaty low end and down tuned drones. Smaller cones for more exact, sharp impact and keeping the sound tight, and the bigger You want it to sound the more You'll want the cones.
I started with a vintage 1X15 back then for heavy rock & aggressive progressive, switched to a 1X15 + 1X18 for more low end and Doom in mid nineties and eventually more and more fast paced BM gigs and tricky progressive things decided to add a 4X4 to that but... welll, didn't feel like I really needed the massive 15 + 18 any more when usually a 4X10 does the trick.
SO.. I'd say... take as many different types of cabs You think You can manage to take from a gig to another.
What comes to electric instruments in general, the mics and the pots and/or the possible preamp are what gives your instrument the sound of its building materials, delivered through the strings. It's cheaper than to buy a new instrument if the bass fits in Your hand and is build of actual tone wood. BUT You might also find another Ibanez with a similar neck - they have, I believe, a dozen or so bass models to upgrade the bass of Your choice, don't they?
