Dude, I had one of those gorillas for a week while visiting family. Supremely awesomely shitty in a fun way. There's a video of Slash playing one on one of the late shows.

The PLL is probably one of the most overrated circuits I've heard. The square wave section is legit, the rest sounds like butthole IMO.tremolo3 wrote:Yeah, fuck that PLL batshit, Ayahuasca too.
I wasn't specifically meaning the Ayahuasca either. If the shoe fits...whatever. LOL. I don't get the desire for that particular pedal, but it's a thing a lot of builders do, and I refuse to play those games for my own personal sanity. I use pedals because they sound a certain way and I like it, not because it's a limited production that no one else has.
It's becomes an obsessive thing for a guy like me. If I tried to get all the rare or instant gratification type pedals, I'd be broke and probably bankrupt. I did this for awhile and it was not good for me mentally. That's the biggest reason I have such disgust for it.

The most annoying term used in Boutique land is definitely "circuit."
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I feel kind of like a dick head for feeling the way I do. Is that wrong? I mean, am I wrong here. It's ok with me if the answer is yes.

No, I think there's definitely something to the fact that pedal builders operate like any other commodity-driven industry, in the sense that there are trends shaped by the market and are expanded as the demand is shown to exist.
I.e., can you imagine bitching about too many PLLs in 2007?

No lol! I can't imagine even finding something remotely like a PLL in 2007.D.o.S. wrote:No, I think there's definitely something to the fact that pedal builders operate like any other commodity-driven industry, in the sense that there are trends shaped by the market and are expanded as the demand is shown to exist.

I get what you're laying down man.

The artificial scarcity created by a strict gatekeeper to drive up costs...yeah that's lame.
Scarcity of desirable NOS parts supply drying up...justifies a limited run free of lameness.
...until you're priced out of the market on something that should be reasonably inexpensive. Def more annoying than buzzwords+jargon

Artificial scarcity does sort of blow.rustywire wrote:artificial scarcity
Genuine scarcity (one person show, OOP parts, etc.) is more forgiveable in my opinion. Though to be fair, I say that because I'm sort of a practitioner of that art.
No, it's a tired aspect to inflate hype and value through unnecessary rarity. These are tools, it either works for you or it doesn't.jwar wrote:I feel kind of like a dick head for feeling the way I do. Is that wrong? I mean, am I wrong here. It's ok with me if the answer is yes.

Naaaaah. Most of the time I see shit about "super-ultra-magic-rare-NOS" shit, it's stuff I can literally go on eBay and buy a bag of a thousand for a few bucks (sans those few transistors or chips with insanely inflated prices).rustywire wrote:Scarcity of desirable NOS parts supply drying up...justifies a limited run free of lameness.
Also, a lot of the time it's another one of those "classic" clones (rangemaster, fuzz face, tonebender, etc.) and the whole marketing of it is, "we used these insanely expensive transistors that add just a twinge of white noise to the circuit and we're gonna sell it to you for 3 times what it costs for a normal one."
Maybe I've just gotten past "NOS" circuits and rarities and limited run anything (then again, I just spent $15 extra on a TA!FM because it was fancy purple sparkle

Those transistors/chips are exactly what I'm talking about. Tubes, too. YMMV.
Their impact depends mostly on the circuit and how it's built, tuned. All are not equal, these things can and do matter.
They seem to make the most difference in the simplest of circuits. If something has 10 components, changing 1 alters 10% of the hardware with potential to affect the sonics subtly or severely, producing a difference greater than the sum of its parts. In a studio environment, their nuance shines.
Variety is the spice of life
