Yup, erryone else has said it already, but cab/amp sims, eq and layering. That's the ticket, no two ways about it.
Personally, I find it freeing. Once you get used to it, you can find toanz that are nearly impossible to replicate IRL, and that's when the funtimes really begin.

I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

This is more or less how I do it. Works OK for nasty bass and keys to lose that awful word direct boom and fizzy high end thing.DRodriguez wrote:Yeah, but otherwise, get a cab sim. Poor mans cab sim is to do a hi pass and low pass on your mixer. Something like (roughly) cut anything below 40 Hz and (roughly) anything above 14 kHz. Play around with your EQ.

Counterpoint: nothing good happens above 40Hz.

I both agree and disagree with that statement. Move over here somewhere near so we can sub 40hz jam

Actually most guitar speakers curve the signal above 5k. What you most likely don't like is the high end above that.
I usually do some combination of mic and direct but doing that, you have to be careful of phasing between the two unless you like that sound.

It's in Arial Bold so you know it's true.
