Yeah, but otherwise, get a cab sim. Poor mans cab sim is to do a hi pass and low pass on your mixer. Something like (roughly) cut anything below 40 Hz and (roughly) anything above 14 kHz. Play around with your EQ.

Alternately try cab impulses if this is just for home

I have the Palmer pdi09 di box.
It's 7/10 for reality.

I'm using a Tech21 VT Bass DI and it takes everything I've thrown at it fine. Works great with synths too, btw.

Yes. I use it with my bandmate on all of our records, and also for recording the demos on YouTube. It's just great. I started using those when I got a PDI 03 to run my Orange Rocker 30 head through headphones at home. After changing amps and moving to smaller clean platforms, I switched to a PDI09 to have an easy recording solution that also doubles as easy run my sound to the PA when playing live.JonnyAngle wrote:I have the Palmer pdi09 di box.

You can also use it alongside a microphone when recording at home or at lower volume and it will get you 99% there.

Yes.
Mid hump in the EQ goes a long way; there's a big difference between using a passive & active eq to achieve this result.
What really helps is having a good great tube mic pre/di with input/output transformers as the front end, after the fuzz.
Stacking that into a passive tube eq (Pultec/Tubetech or more practically, a Warm Audio EQP-WA) is going to make it about as good as it gets.
But fuzz just sounds better with amps, the combination of pre/power/speaker distortion is where it's at
That way you can keep cranking volume until any flub vanishes.

Play with software - even the freebie VSTs are going to be better than straight in realistically.
I'm a slacker and like layering multiple versions of the same alleged amp simulation (different makers' takes on say, a Twin Reverb) and stacking them together to create FakeAmpmageddon.
For me, that's the Fender Mustang V, a now venerable first wave Behringer V Amp Pro rackmount, and a pair of current Boss GT-XXX units.

When I ran a *ahem* found copy of Ableton suite w/ max, there was a great max distortion, which was kind of a digital-sounding rich fuzz with great stereo presence. I'll try and find it, I don't have max now I've got a legit copy of Live.
It was this Shaper plugin, though whether it's worth €10 I dunno.
