Yeah, I mean we live beyond the future in Back to the Future II now, so I think we can safely say we are the greys, going back in time to visit our primitive selves.
Still no viable hoverboards though.

Re: Martin S/C.Candy I will sell you my new record for $1.5m
When I moved to the midwest from New York City (well, there was another place inbetween) I was shocked how people here were still on Cosby sweaters and 2005-2007 hipster detritus in like, 2013. All the punks here are basically adults who dress like frumpy teenage nerds, not in a good way. I got dragged to a show under the auspices of a "sludge" band playing and they were 100% pop-punks ripping off The Jesus Lizard (and Dinosaur Jr) and color me disappointed.daseb wrote:But australia is two years behind so we should be right for a while. We're already working the long game though by pushing the 'we're into frodus/shotmaker/unwound' thing so we can retain cred when some band full of pop punk dudes starts ripping off TJL, then maintain branding opportunities once the bubble bursts.
That is my worthless anecdote. I always joked that Florida is the Australia of America, but it might be the midwest.
(Actually, I love the midwest though).

I think the problem has less to do with the timeline than the impossible-to-prove-but-obviously-true knowledge that a lot of these people would probably dissolve their band tomorrow if they realized how 'behind the times'/passe they were.

Why do people rip off The Jesus Lizard?
They were forgettable enough to begin with.
Ditto Dinosaur Jr.
Sebadoh were so much better than Dinosaur Jr.
I am not an idiot; I'm not ignoring their influence or their importance.
But when I listen to either band I am struck by how not very good they are.
Now Sebadoh, I can get behind.

TBH, never got into DJr or TJL myself. Found them both forgettable. Then again I was never tr00 noise rock.
D.o.S.: have you been to the midwest? Everyone here is so painfully sincere, I think they would wear "being passe" as a badge of honor. I mean, folk punk happened here.

I have, in fact, been through almost all of it. Outside of Chicago there's really no reason for me to ever go back, IMO.psychic vampire. wrote:D.o.S.: have you been to the midwest? I've never been to the Midwest but I revere it as the birthplace of Midwest emo. Jimmy Eat World, Braid, The Promise Ring, Christie Front Drive, Boys Life, all that good stuff. I think I'd like it there based on your description, Vamp. I am very sincere and I do wear it as a badge of honour. I'm inclined to agree with Say Anything when they sing "Go choke on your irony... your artful abortions of sound." I like earnest music. Folk punk is fucking great.

Triple post!
Like ugh, fuck. This is one for the hypothetical "Best of D.o.S. 2016" thread. As if being ahead of the times and en vogue was the burning desire of everyone who ever picked up a guitar. Has it ever occurred to you that a lot of awesome bands started out with no intent other than to completely rip off their heroes? And have fun doing it? Or maybe make money doing it? It worked for St. Vitus. It really, really worked for Quentin Tarantino.D.o.S. wrote:I think the problem has less to do with the timeline than the impossible-to-prove-but-obviously-true knowledge that a lot of these people would probably dissolve their band tomorrow if they realized how 'behind the times'/passe they were.

I have a friend that always wants to do bands and stuff and no matter what we start out wanting to do he always writes folk/pop/punk. This drove me crazy for a long time because there is no possible way for me to play this style without being fake/contrived/painful and boring. He manages to take whatever riff I show him and turn it into a folky pretty thing, and write genuine words that clearly are from his heart. I can't write heartfelt lyrics to save my life. I've grown to really respect his sensibilities, even though it's not a style I really ever want to listen to.

Re: Martin S/C.Candy I will sell you my new record for $1.5m
You just described the dynamic between me and the drummer in the only band I've been in. She would write these awful, laughable, crusty metal songs. I was like... where the fuck is the chorus? The hook? The verse? The lyrics? Why are your lyrics about raping babies while vomiting on them? Why is it not on acoustic? Where are your love songs? Why do you exist? And so onPeteeBee wrote:I have a friend that always wants to do bands and stuff and no matter what we start out wanting to do he always writes folk/pop/punk. But LOLs aside, this is so funny!
For me, it's like, I feel contrived and boring if I'm not writing lyrics from the heart. If it's not from the heart it's not you. It might as well be someone else's song. What could be easier than picking up a guitar and singing what you're thinking? For me I feel complete dysphoria between me and my music if my lyrics are anything other than about me, about my own life, about how I feelno possible way for me to play this style without being fake/contrived/painful and boring... I can't write heartfelt lyrics to save my life.
