So 3 builds and one soldering iron burn later the culprit turned out to be a faulty power jack... oops. Well, the important thing is that now I have a soda meiser and a VFM to play with, and I found a good parts supplier. Thanks to everyone for taking their time to help me!
I'd submit pictures but I am very very very much not artistic, so, uh, everyone imagine an unpainted box with two switches and two black knobs with "V" and "I" written by them in sharpie!

So you have a VFM/SM switch and a chaos switch I'm guessing? Sounds like a rad time.
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

You got it.
I also learned that in the future, I can avoid this problem by just installing the LED with everything else rather than test the circuit first... could have saved a lot of headaches had I done that in the first place

You need a multimeter.

I love the smell of solder in the morning.

You'll eventually figure out what to look for... power getting to the active components, all the grounds connected somehow, etc.

congrats on getting it working... but you should be easy on yourself, because the SM circuit although small is very particular and not a circuit i would recommend building as a first build.... but still, your debugging skills get better as you build more...
my first build was a fuzz factory clone, i spent two weeks trying to get a sound out of it before finding the problem (burned out 2n3904) and it was a worthwhile frustration indeed....
