about two hours ago some psycho tried to break down my front door.
the neighbour accidentally buzzed him into the apartment building. i have no idea who it was (i don't even have a peep hole).
but he was kicking and slamming his body into my door trying to break down my apartment door.
yelling like a maniac for me to open the door or something.
i just threw my self on the other side to brace the impacts, yelling back at him to just" FUCK OFF ".
I dont' know if it lasted 30 seconds, or two minutes cause it was quite scary.
i really thought the frame was gonna rip out and he'd get in. he must have slammed really hard over two dozen times.
its really scary that he knew someone was in the apartment yet he kept trying to break in! wtf!?
my girlfriend ran to grab a bat and called the cops, they came soon enough but he was gone by then.
i really don't even know anyone psycho like that, neither do i owe anyone any money or done someone any wrong.
it's just fucked.



my front door is now busted and can't even be opened.
seems like the deadbolt did it's job (but its completely fucked and will also have to be replaced too i guess)

i don't think i'm gonna sleep tonight.

a home is a sanctuary, it's a place where you go to relax and be vulnerable and safe... that's fucked up, sounds like this person may have been mentally ill or completely shitfaced.... the good news is this person did not get in and harm either you or your girlfriend and it's highly unlikely they will come back....

that shit is fucked up, but you've got quite a story out of it and sounds like you handled yourself well given the situation.... where the hell do you live???

okay, story time... not to take away from oink's experience, but i wanna make you laugh, oink....

it was 1983... my family and i lived in an apartment in a military housing community in germany... back then living on an army base in a foreign country was as safe as middle-american in the 1950s... so we always had our door unlocked... my family is ukrainian-polish immigrants from chicago so they didn't have many "ethnic" friends... so it's a saturday afternoon, my dad and i are watching soccer on tv, i'm playing with my star wars toys on the floor and my dad is sitting on the couch in a wife beater, his white briefs underwear and white tube socks drinking a beer.... suddenly the door flies open and the angriest black dude stomps in screaming expletives and all bloody hell... my dad and i froze... the guy realizes he in the wrong house, turns into the nicest guy, totally embarrassed, apologizes and calmly backs out of the apartment and shuts the door... my dad and i look at each other stunned, both of us hearing words we had never heard before in our lives, i mean this guy could swear with the best of them... seconds later, we hear the exact thing upstairs, without missing a beat, the dude started his spiel all over again to its rightful victim...

it helped thinking about how much more traumatizing a full home invasion situations would have been.
yet it's not comforting thinking that if they'd try again but with the back door, i've got no other working exit at the moment..
odds are that it was probably a completely random drunk/high guy off the street.

As far as kicking his ass, I think the laws vary from state to state, but generally speaking, if the intruder poses an immediate threat to you or your family, you may use physical force to defend yourself. Once again, this is different in each state, so check your local laws, but from what it sounds like, you definitely would have been acting in self defense.

edit: i see you are in canada. I have absolutely no idea about the laws there. ask a mounty, maybe?

Whoa... that is fucked up. Ever since we had our kid, I've had occasional nightmares about home invasions. I do keep a few large blunt objects around "just in case," but I'm not sure if I'd have the intestinal fortitude to actually use them.

I don't how one recovers from that sort of thing, but I'd guess that focusing on practical matters would help. Get that door fixed, pick up some mace, try to focus on getting things done and not freaking out. Do you live in a high-crime part of the city, or was this truly a freak occurrence? Hopefully it's the latter, and you won't have to worry about this again...

Over Thanksgiving break while i was at home with my family, I got a call from my roomate Greg at like noon on thanksgiving. Basically, what had happened was, two guys planned to rob our house blind, and what they did was Park their van in front, opened the doors and started trying to break the doorhandle with a screwdriver. LUCKILY, my neighbors in the Apartment complex next door saw this happening from his window, and called the police station. ALSO LUCKILY (and unluckily in some cases) the police station is a block away. So what ended up happening was the dudes gave up on the screwdriver bit and literally BROKE THE WOODEN DOOR IN HALF, ran in, unlocked the front door, and found themselves met out front by 4 policemen. It turns out they were both armed, and Greg slept through it the entire time... His bedroom is above the back door. He woke up to 4 policemen in his bedroom. He got so lucky he wasn't killed. I got so lucky all my gear wasn't taken.

Dude's were also wanted previously for murder. As i said, Greg's lucky.

Most places are ok with it, as self defense, as long as the intruder is still IN your house. If they leave and you attack them still, you will very likely go to jail. I can shoot someone in the face in they break in to my place, no problem. I'd likely go for a less lethal area though (so I could torture them until police arrived ).
I'd say you did the right thing, by simply keeping the guy out, instead of letting him in to wallop him. That would bring more trouble than it's worth.

I don't know what it is lately but everyone is getting robbed/attempted. My roommates folks had someone kick in their back door a couple days ago. Looks like the burglar got scared though and left before he found anything good (got a broken computer and some bunk jewelry). We had what sounded like someone rummaging through stuff on our back porch LAST NIGHT. There's no light back there to flick on a get the "deer in the headlights" so I grabbed a jacket and my Louisville and ran around to the back. By then there was nothing. When I can back around the corner, my roommate was waiting by the door with a rubber mallet

i've got the lock fixed and i got to inspect the door and the frame. everything seems really solid. likely it was gonna hold regardless of my bracing.

I've always considered where i live decently safe. not a troubled part of town. but still it's city living and i do live on a main street a few blocks from a subway station. I do get random drunk kids buzzing my door late at night, but they're just bored kids and i just ignore it cause i hear all the neighbours buzzers go off too, its obviously someone fucking around, i don't think they'd even come up. my neighbour who did buzz up this guy though thought it was her roommate coming home. not sure if i should make beef with that yet. pretty lame they didn't think to come and see considering all the ruckus going on. I'll let the landlord decide what to do with that.
I'm moving in a month anyways. to a side street, an hopefully shit like this never happens again.


after reading canadian laws on home invasions this morning i've learned that i have to just flee the apartment.
and if i can't flee, i have to use the minimum amount of force to try and stop the assailant.
torturing a bound invader while waiting for the police is a big no no.
it sucks that i can't even have a gun and use it to protect myself.
guns need to stay locked away, and bullets somewhere else.
you have to give the criminals time to stab me a few times while i fiddle with keys and load up.
& i learned that i need to plant a weapon on the criminal if i do kill them and they didn't have one.

Hah, a bunch of people I know personally knew the guy. I think I might have been at a party at the place, or at least right next to it.

hahahaha. The mounties are actually called the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and they're mostly only found in smaller towns in the north and are all over the Praries and the West. I've never seen one in Quebec at all (which is where Oink and I live). Oink, where the hell do you live, man? If you're out by Frontenac, GET THE HELL AWAY FROM THERE!! I lived between Papineau & Frontenac when I first moved to MTL and I saw all kinds of horrible shit. Now I live near Lionel-Groulx and am happy and cozy. Incidentally, I remember reading a news article a few years ago about somebody that lived in a sketchy area and had set up booby traps for robbers... one day, a burglar entered the house while nobody was home, got all fucked up in the traps and actually SUED the dude that owned the place. A rubber mallet? haha. I guess in a crazy situation, you just grab the first thing that you can.
There's been a lot of crazy stuff going down in Montreal lately... I've been wondering the same thing. Did you know that we live in the most corrupt city in Canada? Ever wonder about all the fires that have been going on the last couple of years? Ever notice that within a few days of a place burning down there's already a sign up announcing the name of the new business that'll be taking over? I have a few theories about the violence that's sprung up... but maybe I shouldn't speak them over the internet. *shifty eyes*
