Catalinbread DLS vs. WIIO

Post by starcastic »

Hey dudes. I need an opinion on something.

I was looking into buying a really punchy overdrive that maintained a lot of clarity and could also get ridiculous if I needed it to. I've narrowed it down to the DLS or the WIIO. Both sound amazing and the price is right.

Is there anyone who has played either of these who can tell me what their differences/strengths/weaknesses are?

DLS - Marshall
WIIO - Hiwatt

DLS has an internal switch to go from v1 to v2. Also has two gain settings (Rock = low gain, Rawk = higher gain). Supposedly great to stack with other dirt.

WIIO has the Treble/Bass EQ and gives a more clangy sound to your guitar (at least from all the demos I've heard). The gain has been changed since the original run, and this has supposedly made it easier to work with.

I like the sound of the DLS more myself, but that's because I prefer the Marshall sound. You can't really go wrong with either one.

Sweet. Thanks for the reply! I guess I'm kind of lost because I've never played through either a Marshall or a Hiwatt. Which one of the two pedals would you say is more suited for noise rock? I play a lot of weird chords into big, spastic leads. I use a Strat and love that deep skronk that it gives me. Would like something to accentuate that.

they both hold clarity pretty well.

I bought them for amp simulation when I need to deal with shitty gig amp (set pretty clean, after all the pedal). they both response like real tube amp.

As a standalone overdrive/ distortion, WIIO is more pedalboard friendly since it has two band eq and is thicker in lower mids.

Yeah... I think I'm leaning a little more towards the WIIO after seeing this video:

Also, this should be out soon, and sounds like a fantastic Hiwatt simulation:

You could always go for the SFT, which emulates an Ampeg really nicely. Gives a huge bassy boost that's not overwhelming too.

I don't use my v1 wiio as an amp emulator...I do not care for hiwatts, and I have 0 interest in sounding like "live at leeds" or what have you.

But the wiio is a great tool. I left it on once by accident on a lower setting and it took me a while to realize it was on. Something was different, but it still sounded like my amp.
It was an amazing boost that added a bit of (sparkle? glassiness? bite? fuckbuzzwords)
Start cranking the gain and it starts to get nasty, dimed it's pretty much a fuzz (the newer ones are much tamer I hear)
There are some that call me...morningstaru?

I had a v1 DLS and it was more "Marshall flavored OD" and the RAWK switch sent it into distortion territory. It sounded awesome and I loved it a lot. I also have a Christmas WIIO and it is absolute distortion bliss. I mean, it brings some seriously mean rock tones. It's just impressive. I would say that the DLS is a little more versatile, but the WIIO is way meaner and way louder...like stupid loud

I'm not sure if they want one...

Nich had a falling out on the forums earlier when the devi-hcfx-drama-shitstorm happened, and somehow he also got pissed at Tom. I don't think he's too keen on coming back here now.

Wasn't really a "used to," he just joined because of some tension going on between him and a couple of builders here. Even the good Dr. Scientist got involved at some point, but they were gentlemanly about it and settled it with a duel.

Okay, maybe that last part was an embellishment, but you get the idea.
