Reediest fuzz?

Post by CBGB »

You know how sometimes thick fuzzes have a thick blown tenor-saxophone reed-like quality? That's what I'm after.

Sometimes the Wolf Computer can do it, and the arc flash oscillator occasionally too - but the sound is hard to dial in consistently. Maybe some of the Devi fuzzes can get there too.

Anyone know what I'm on about? If so, can you think if any fuzzes that can do that?

The GZ sounds pretty brassy to me in a similar to what you're describing. But before trying anything else, I'd set the controls on you're Wolf Computer to...
Fuzz: 2-3 o'clock
Bias: 3-4 o'clock
and use the sag to tune your tone to taste, but somewhere around 4-4:30 is where I'd suggest.
You might have to tweak the bias knob a little to kill the oscillation but it's my favorite setting.
edit: htsamurai is probably right

trumpets don't have reeds :?:

If we're thinking of the same sound, my Soda Meiser combined with a neck humbucker gets that sound with the intensity set at about 11:00. Also, when I run my SInging Tree into a '69 clone I have (built by stanimal), I get that thick, dry sound you're talking about.

I'm hearing a tenor sax at the top of its range, as opposed to an alto playing the same note. Is that in the same ballpark?

OK, I admit I have no idea what you're looking for. Can you post a clip of someone doing what you're after?
Something like this?

..only fuzz and guitar?

Sekova wedge fuzz has that dry heave kinda thing going on. Maestro FZ-1B to an extent too because of the squelch.
Fuzzrite with a Sprague module. Try a MkI Tonebender with the attack turned way down, and you'll get a starved gasping for air kinda sound.

I've gotten that effect from the Disaster Fuzz.

the best way is to stack some saggy fuzz into an overdrive in my experience. fuzz with a little bit octave helps here, and make things louder. I think with a proper od can stabilize your fuzzes, and you can adjust your fuzzes to get the brass feel. I've never tried acr flash before (I intend to), but my SPAE is good enough for me to get this kind of sound.

B:assmaster! I've found that with the harmonic switches in the right position, the sensitivity dialed back, and just enough "bass" signal dialed in there, I can get some really great horn-esque tones (dare I say "horny" tones?).

I don't know if it matters, but I have the silicon version.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I have a silicon and agree wholeheartedly.

THANKS everyone for the help :thumb:

Yeah, not the Tromboner or Trumpet fuzzes – I’m not looking for a brassy parp tho that’s cool too (maybe fuzz can cover the whole horn section? ).

More like a thick fuzz with a wee bit of squealing and a long breathy sustain – yeah maybe a bit of your “dry heave” devnulljp  - the breathiness, that’s the thing.

Does that make sense? :idk:

@wfs1234
Those are pretty much the settings I was doing with the Wolfie, but it’s hit and miss… (with the OD in front too)

Note to self: must check out B:assmaster...

Yeah, definitely check out the B:assmaster or other Brassmaster variations. If you want examples, I have a tune I could send you to show you the sound I got...
