Trial and error...

Post by Mudfuzz »

It's funny, some things that sound great in rehearsal just don't translate on a gig :grumpy:
My board keeps getting smaller as I weed out stuff that sounds great when the band practices but live turns to sludge or I get lost. The problem that I find is I can't tell intill I get to play the song I'm planing on using the FXs for it on it live, and if you have a lot of songs you don't always end up playing all the songs :bob:

I've kicked about four pedals off my live board so far and am planning on doing more weeding. I'm finding I can do more with less really and the over options actually get in my way

Sometimes a pedal you just fucking love the sound of just doesn't work for you in the way you need/want it too.

For me those are:
Big muffs, I fucking give the fuck up on the things I love the sound of them for recording and solo but every time I use one live :grumpy:

And My Moog phaser, I've tried many settings now. For recording  and turing my bass into a synth  but the minute I need a dirty phase sound [and I NEED this] I get volume issues [up] and my sound turns to sludge, maybe if I put in a blender I wouldn't have a problem but I don't want to. So this will mean I'm going to go back to my trusty phase 45, and keep a eye out for something else.....maybe.

I just wanted to vent a bit....

I found the same things with Muffs, myself. I think it's because EQ-wise, they're rather scooped. Lack of mids = no presence on stage.
Great for recording and rehearsals, not so great if you're performing in a less-than-professional (meaning, no monitors, crappy p.a., etc.) venue.

Have you tried/do you own an EQ pedal? That might help you even out your sound and help you stand out in the live mix.

Ross made a pretty great Phaser Distortion in the late 70's.

I do have one, and my amp has a footswitchable 7 band as well, but, at this point I don't want to have pedal that fixes other pedals on my board. The only exception to this is my loopmaster 5 loop-looper which I use more as a way or turning more then one thing at a time then anything else.

Those are always tempting and I like the color, but, how does it work for bass, and not lead bass.

As a bassist there is that make or break point with all effects, as in does it get in the way of me doing my job :grumpy: I love odd and crazy stuff but in the real world [for me] it never gets used outside of the studio.

I have my main dirt sound, I've gone through over 15 boxes over the years to find one that does what I want and sounds like I want so for me the phase part is the issue. I'm still looking for a secondary fuzz for really wild things but have high hopes for the Workhorse as far as that goes..... but you you had to post that pict... I'm a weak person.... now I have gas for a pedal I really don't even need....

Ahhhh, sorry. Didn't get that you are a bass player. No idea how the Ross sounds on bass, and I odn't have one to test. May be heading to a bud's studio next wknd and I bet they have one though. Will see if I can do a lil research for ya. That Phaser Distortion has some trimpots on the inside that help you tune some of the sweeps. Wonder if those would help balance it for the low low?

That's cool, thanks . The low-lows worry is more on the distortion side of things. Most phasers let you lows through fine. the reason I keep going back to the MXR phase 45 is because when you run dirt into it it only phases the dirt and lets the lows slip through without being phased ;) . This has pluses and minuses and the pedal has no real versatility, but it sounds real good. The moog has MUCH versatility but it has so much of it's own sound no matter what the setting is that when you use it you have to want to sound all moogy, not a bad thing in most cases, my real complaint about it is it is real hard to get it's volume right; you have to set it differently depending on what you run into it do to it's pre-amp. My all time favorite phase is the sovtek smallstone [I also have a 70's one] but like the moog it takes over the sound for me.

You see the real problem with all this and the line I kind of have to walk is that my main group is a trio and our front woman switches between keys and guitar so what I tend to use effects for is to make up for another guitarist and/or keyboardist while still being a bassist hence my constant balancing act with all my effects. I know at some point I'm just going to say fuck it and bring two amps one for straight bass and one for effects and be done with it but that is a lot of gear to lug around so if I can get around all the lugging........
