Everybody's talking about floops. Yeah, they're awesome for sure but what about an amp's effects loop? What kind of crazy things can be done with an amp's send and return?
Other than the typical use, the only thing that I can think of is what I'd call "amp stacking". This is when you run the send of one amp into the return of another one, allowing for combinations of preamps, poweramps and rectifiers that aren't normally possible. I'm not sure what this is actually called.
Has anybody ever heard of someone tweaking their amps effects loop so that it could be used like a feeback loop? that'd be pretty neat.
Any other ideas?

Re: The many uses of Effects Loops
Feedback loops in effects loops can be dicey. I used to put my old boss moddeling wah thing in the FX loop because i wanted to use it for the resonant low pass filter.
Only problem was it kept blowing the fuze for the output stage, I think because there was just nothing to limit it.
I'm pretty boring, i just use it so I can leave my delay on and in tap mode because the loop is footswitchable.

feed effect send into the input you would normally use for your guitar. mess with the preamp settings. everyone you are playing for will be doing this:

I was wondering about that, actually. But I thought that sending all that power from the first amp directly into the input of the next one would overload the preamp - and not in a nice way. The line in of an amplifier is designed to take high impedance, LOW level input. Anybody know the tech behind this and whether or not it'd work?
I just read thru this again and found myself wondering whether you meant running Amp A's send into Amp B's input or whether you were talking about just one amp... which doesn't really work in my head.

Re: The many uses of Effects Loops
I used to use a Line6 UX2 Digital recording interface as my preamp, that would then go into my RC20xl, and then that went into the return of a Crate powerblock.
Using your Laptop as a Temporary amplifier = Original use for an Effects loop?
Once I used an AB box with a Marshal MG15 stacked into the return of my old Bugera 333XL's effects loop with my BMP Russian in front of the MG with volume and gain dime'd in order to get a horrible fuzz tone for shits and giggles at one of my practices

On most amplifiers that will cause oscillation.
I have done it with shitty little spider IIIs, tiny like 15 watt practice amps, etc by using the headphone jack into the same amplifiers input jack.
By doing this and adding the appropriate amount of gain you can cause oscillations.

Re: The many uses of Effects Loops
as far as i know, yeah there is no damage caused by the oscillatingness of this use. we used to do a breakdown in the middle of a poppy song where the instruments got unplugged and all the amps were used for this kind of noise. it was fun.
