Actually, I don't want to sound like a smartass, but I like paragraphic eq I use a Sound Forge plug-in--it's great to have the Q sweep and the bands. It's particularly useful for notching. Here's the only hardware version I could find:

A parametric gives you lots more control. With the graphic EQ's you just have different bands made up of certain frequencies. I think of it more like if I were a doctor I would use a graphic EQ to chop somebodies arm off, and I would use a parametric EQ to do brain surgery.

With the parametric you just have so much finer control over how many frequencies or just a specific frequency are boosted or cut. With the graphic only certain set frequencies are affected.

Tone controls on amps/guitars are parametric but most don't have a 'Q' control (sets anywhere from a notch filter to a nice round bell curve and what frequency the filter centers around).

Graphic EQ's are useful for eliminating feedback, weird harmonics, ground loop hum, etc.. You can get more extreme sounds though from a graphic EQ (mainly because there are more bands to mess with and each band only affects that frequency).

For people just getting started with EQ I think a graphic is the way to go (easier to comprehend which frequencies are being affected).

Isn't graphic EQ a lot like shelving EQ? I've always used Para EQ in Logic. Makes things loads nicer.

You can use a graphic EQ to make a half-ass shelving EQ but is not as good a method as a designated shelving EQ. I like using the 'Channel EQ' in Logic because you can get the shelves, bells, notches, and high pass and low pass filters very easily.

In the screenshot below you have from left to right a shelving EQ, bell/curve EQ, a notch EQ, and then a low pass EQ.

That's what I meant. I've never felt a need for using shelving EQ, but I guess it can be useful in some situations.

Logic's EQ is so damn useful though.
