What were people using between 1967 and 1969?
i know you guys know.
Os Mutantes, The Pretty Things (particularly S.F. Sorrow), Jefferson Airplane, Peanut Butter Conspiracy..... some of the most rippin' tones i have ever heard.
I figure i should start with a Fuzz Face and a Maestro...
maybe even one of the pink walco fuzz boxes.

McCartney used a Tonebender on Think for Yourself and Richards used a Maestro Fuzz Tone on Satisfaction. Those were both in 65. That's the earliest ones I know for sure

Maestro FZ-1 So Old it uses 2 AA Batteries... came about around 1962 and was the first distortion effect on a hit record, heard on Satisfaction by the Stones.

Can somebody find me the Walco Fuzz tone circuit, i've spent the last like 2 hours searching.. somebody said they had one on DIY stompboxes, but i couldn't find it.. i just got these crazy ideas.

Pay no attention to the man with the No. 2 pencils near your amplifierzzzzz.....
Also - great unintentional distortion devices:
1) CB microphone plugged into low-end consumer tape deck plugged into low-end consumer combo record player stereo. Play into mic, turn up until walls of distorted feedback commence.
2) Old 16mm film projectors have mic inputs and tiny amps. Great for guitar when OD'ed!
Furthermore - Different thing altogether but didn't Duane Eddy get his reverb twang by recording his amp through a giant water cooler jug?

Earliest - Maestro FZ-1, developed by Glen Snotty in 1961 to duplicate the sound of a mixing console with a blown tube. First released in 1962, apparently sat on the shelves until Keef used one on Satisfaction in 1965.
The Tone Bender MkI was Gary Hurst's attempt to get more sustain out of that circuit, and eventually led to the development of the Mk1.5, MkII etc. Tat's a Mk I on Heart Full of Soul.
The Fuzz Face didn't appear until 1966. AFAIK, no-one knows who designed it. Jimi made it popular though.
