DS-1?

Post by Chumley »

Don't lynch me! Hear me out!
I got a used DS-1 from a friend of mine a few months ago, and as I'm very new to the world of guitar and effects, it was my first pedal. For a thirty dollar pedal, I was satisfied with it. After trying a few other distortions and fuzzes at the local guitar shop, though, I was feeling pretty bored with it. However, after picking up a variable-voltage transformer, the thing took on a new light: at 15 volts, with the distortion all the way up and the tone at 10:00, the thing sounds amazing. Likewise, with the distortion at 9:00, the tone maxed, and running at 3 volts, it sounds like some boutique overdrive. So, my question: is the humble DS-1 a blasphemy, or can creative uses save it from itself? :picard:

heya chumz, while I'm not huge on the DS1 I also don't hate it. Mr. Spunkiez though 'does' love it, a whole lot, enough that we almost broke up when he told me that he was preferring it over his fuzzes

Check the Monte Allums mod kits.
http://www.monteallums.com/pedal_mods.html

I did the rectifier tri gain mod on one for my son and it sounds great.
He didn’t have the Roxx mod at the time, otherwise I’d have put that one in.
It took less than an hour to disassemble, drill, mod and reassemble.

I keep thinking next time I come across a used DS-1 I’ll do another.

won't that kill it?

The DS-1 is really not as bad as everyone says it is IMHO.

They're decent, new ones are different than the old classics, so that's probably why most people rag on em. They're pretty great for the money, and have lots of awesome noisemakin mods with just some wire! :joy:

i'm of the thinking that nothing is blasphemy and not using gear because of what others say/think is sorta like ... reverse cork sniffing.
ya know?

Aslong as the caps and chip inside are rated for that voltage use, it should be fine... otherwise it might explode a little bit and burnt caps smell badddd.

I don't even own that pedal anymore. It was really fun because the sounds of the bass (fret clang and such) would come out clearly, unlike a fuzz, but I plugged my EHX Graphic Fuzz back in and that sorta changed.

Now I basically only use my Hype, though.

Anyhow, I think DS-1s are cool. I actually found tones with it that I really, really dug. That said, I probably won't ever have another one. I feel like I could build a better dirt box with, like, 5 parts.
