Hey, looking for some fuzz advice!

Post by Chumley »

First of all: I'd like to make it clear I neither own nor need a fuzz pedal.
Secondly, I'd like to make it VERY clear that I plan on geting one anyway. In the interest of selecting one, I've done much browsing, and I gotta say, I'm overwhelmed by options. So, unwashed internet masses, I turn to you: what is the best fuzz for $100 or less? My criteria are:
1) It's gotta be fun. I mean, Fuzz Faces sound great, but they're not FUN.
2) However, I'd also like to be able to get "playable" tones out of it.
3) I'm not a guitarist, so no restrictions based on style-noise oriented, metal, whatever.
4) The price range is unfortunately non-negotiable.

So... what do you guys think?

I've considered the Disaster. Oscillation is great, but how does it sound more conventionally? For the AF, opposite question. How obnoxious can it get?

SM, Aenima, and Hyperion, all usable in the mundane world and still capable of nasty stuff.

I would recommend a DE Hyperion or DE Soda Meiser. In fact I would be willing to sell my Hyperion for $80 (price includes shipping). The Hyperion is a bit brighter sounding than the SM but makes excellent fuzz tones. For the exact one I have check out: http://www.analoguehaven.com/devieverusa/hyperion/

Devi's fuzzes put all others to shame, except I am very partial to my Wolf Computer, which is out of your price range, and is a different breed of fuzz!

I love the Hyperion. Mannequin, I might have to take you up on that...
Does anyone have any good demos of the SM? I'm liking the sound of "chaos switch". ;)
